Chelsea battle Liverpool for Nunes

Chelsea and Liverpool look set for a summer battle for the signature of Matheus Nunes from Wolves, with both teams keen to to reinforce with the player rated at £44 million, and Graham Potter expecting to need to move on from N’Golo Kante and Jorginho, with the Telegraph mentioning Nunes as one of several midfield targets.

“Chelsea are prepared to compete with Liverpool for Wolves’ Matheus Nunes when they step up their pursuit of midfielders in the summer,” the paper claims.

“The 24-year-old has admirers at Stamford Bridge and they are set to be in the race for him at the end of the season when he comes on the market after just one campaign at Molineux. Nunes is on a list of potential targets for Chelsea which includes West Ham captain Declan Rice and Brighton’s Moises Caicedo, while Everton’s Amadou Onana is also being looked at for Graham Potter’s squad.

“They were interested in a Premier League record deal for Enzo Fernandez earlier in the window but could not close a deal with Benfica.”

Everton set to lose out on Ziyech deal

Chelsea winger Hakim Ziyech is wanted by both Everton and Roma, but with the Italian side hoping to sell Nicolo Zaniolo in order to raise the £25m asking price, the Blues are content to wait for them as they would prefer to sell to a club abroad rather than a fellow Premier League team, according to a report in the Daily Mail.

The paper states: “Roma are currently looking to sell highly-rated youngster Nicolo Zaniolo in order to raise the £25 million to sign Ziyech.

“It is believed the Blues are happy to wait for Roma to find the sufficient funds, keen not to offload the Moroccan to another top flight club in England.

“Tottenham and Newcastle have each been linked with the attacking midfielder, but the Premier League sides will have to offer substantial transfer fees to beat Roma to his signature.”

Savage set for loan deal

Robbie Savage was part of the famous Manchester United youth conveyor belt in the 1990s but ultimately made his name away from Old Trafford, instead succeeding at Leicester City. However his son, Charlie Savage, is impressing in the youth levels at United and the Sun reports that he will go out on loan soon to continue his development.

The Sun writes: “Charlie is now set to join League One side Forest Green Rovers on loan to further his development.

“He has made one appearance for United’s first-team, a one-minute cameo off the bench in a Champions League game against Young Boys in December 2021.

“Charlie signed a new United contract last May, which runs until the summer of 2025.”

Barca cannot register Gavi deal

Barcelona are unable to register their 18-year-old midfielder Gavi’s next contract, reports the Mirror. The teenager had agreed fresh terms with Xavi Hernandez looking to tie down the talented youngster to a long-term contract but problems with the club’s salary cap compliance mean that any ratification will have to wait until the summer, which poses further problems.

The paper states: “As a result of their non-compliance with those two articles, Barca are unable to register new deals for Gavi, Ronald Araujo, Inaki Pena or Alejandro Balde. They will now have to wait until the summer before finally registering Gavi as a first-team player.

“The constraints preventing Barca from ratifying Gavi’s new contract also means that Xavi is set to be ‘frustrated’ in his desire to sign any new players this month. It is said that the Barca boss is now resigned to completing the season without any additions to his current squad.”
