Christian Atsu reportedly trapped after devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria
Newcastle United are “praying for some positive news” amid reports their former player is among the missing following major earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.
A 7.8 magnitude quake struck near Gaziantep in the early hours of Monday, followed by a 7.5 magnitude tremor arriving at 13:30 local time. Over 2,000 people have already been confirmed dead in the disaster.
Ghana international Atsu, who currently plays for Turkish side Hatayspor, is reportedly among the missing along with sporting director Taner Savut. A number of other players and staff have been rescued from rubble.

“We pray for Ghana International Christian Atsu and victims of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria. We continue with our efforts to establish contact with officials of Hataspor and the Turkish Football Federation, considering the difficult situation,” read a statement from the Ghana Football Association.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Christian Atsu and our brothers and sisters in Turkey and Syria. We remain hopeful for positive news.”
On Sunday, Atsu scored a 97th minute winner as Hatayspor beat Kasimpasa 1-0.
