Christina Dixon gets 90 days for treating daughter’s liver cancer with CBD oil

An Oregon mom will spend 90 days behind bars for attempting to cure her teen daughter’s cancer with CBD oil and vitamins instead of more conventional medical treatments.

Christina Dixon, 39, was sentenced Tuesday after being found guilty of first-degree custodial interference and two counts of first-degree criminal mistreatment in November, Oregon Live reported.

Dixon represented herself at trial — and even called her daughter, Kylee, now 17 — to the stand, the outlet said.

Kylee Dixon was first diagnosed with liver cancer in 2018, and underwent three rounds of chemotherapy, Oregon Live reported.

By 2019, it was clear that her mother was not allowing her then-13-year-old daughter to undergo further treatment as outlined by her medical team.

“She took her daughter off chemotherapy, refused to re-engage in any sort of oncological care in favor of CBD oil, vitamins and other homeopathic remedies, putting her daughter at risk of death,” Deputy District Attorney Brian Powell said Tuesday.

Dixon was indicted in June of that year, after she and Kylee failed to appear for the latter’s scheduled surgery, per KOIN.

Authorities found Dixon and her daughter in Las Vegas. Kylee was returned to Oregon as a ward of the state, and Dixon turned herself into jail two months later.

The case subsequently sparked a statewide controversy over a parent’s right to make choices about their child’s medical care — even if it contradicts physicians’ advice.

“Oregonians have rallied behind Kylee and her mother because we believe in medical freedom and the right to a second opinion,” Republican Sen. Kim Thatcher said at the time, according to KOIN.

Kylee underwent a successful surgery in early 2020, and was declared cancer-free that year, Oregon Live reported at the time.

Prosecutors initially asked for a 19-month sentence on the grounds that Dixon had seriously risked her daughter’s life.

Defense attorney Greg Oliveros, however, argued that Dixon’s clean criminal record should earn her probation, with no prison time.

“I think one could argue her love for her child clouded her common sense or judgment,” Oliveros told the court Tuesday, according to KINO.

Kylee Dixon was not present at the sentencing, but has been supporting her mother online, Oregon Live noted.

Dixon’s ex-husband, Jim Dixon, told the outlet that he has not seen his daughter since 2020 — and worries that she has not seen a doctor since her surgery.
