Couple discover ‘freaky’ hidden room behind bathroom wall
This bed will give your nightmares.
Carolyn and Steven Sparks say they are left “terrified” after finding a “freaky” secret room concealed behind a wall in their home — and it contains a creepy wrought-iron bed frame.
The British couple recently purchased their Victorian-era property in Brighton, England and were completely unaware of the room’s existence until they began having contract work carried out for renovations.
“It wasn’t on the agents’ details, and nor did we see it when we viewed the property,” Carolyn told Caters in an interview on Friday. “It’s easily missed as it’s accessed via a little WC [bathroom].”
An architect noticed the hidden door inside the small bathroom, with Carolyn whipping out her phone to film the disturbing discovery.
The video shows that the door opens up to a steep staircase that descends down to the secret room, which is located in the basement.
In the clip, a creeped-out Carolyn and Steven are seen walking down the dark stairs armed with flashlights, before they find themselves in the tiny, terrifying space.
The homeowners were left with goosebumps after seeing the spooky single bed frame, which takes up the entire width of the narrow room.
“I thought it’d be funny to film as all we could see was cobwebs,” Carolyn said. “But we didn’t expect to find a single iron bed, so it was definitely a little bit freaky!”
Carolyn and Steven later learned that the room was not some sort of ominous torture chamber, but a room used to store coal during the Victorian era.
It’s unclear why a bedrame was moved into the concealed space, but the couple have not yet removed it. Their daughter even contemplated using the room to shoot a horror movie for school, with the bed serving as a spooky prop for the flick.
Meanwhile, Carolyn and Steven will keep the secret room accessible even after renovations are completed on their home, learning that it provides important access to pipework beneath the property.
While the pair’s discovery may have been disturbing, it’s not exactly rare — with several other homeowners also happening upon secret rooms at their residences.
Back in February, a Utah couple discovered a small room behind a bookcase at their property, which they described as looking like a “torture dungeon.”
In September last year, an English homeowner went viral on TikTok after discovering a passageway leading to secret rooms concealed behind a wall inside his 16th century home.
Meanwhile, in May of last year, a New York City renter was left stunned when she found an entire secret room hidden behind the mirror of the bathroom in her tiny apartment.
