Dad comes out as non-binary to kids after they see him in dress

A father-of-two has told his two young children that he is non-binary after they saw photos of him wearing a dress.

Dave Moore, 40, decided to disclose his true identity to his 5-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter on Saturday after attending the Bristol Pride parade in England.

The IT consultant — who uses the pronouns he/him — told Southwest News Service that he has spent the majority of his life in “horrific” pain due to “hiding” his gender identity.

Moore had already come out to his partner, Alex Andersz, 35, with the couple attending the Pride event together at the weekend.

“The kids wanted to know how Pride was and Alex asked if they wanted to see her make-up and started showing them photos [from the event],” the dad explained. “She was skipping through the photos on a phone and there were photos of me there in my outfit — which was a dress.”

“My daughter was looking at the photos but she didn’t twig at all,” Moore added.

Later that day, Moore decided to open up to his children, showing the youngsters the photos of himself in the dress again.

“My daughter just kind of giggled, and she’s like ‘Oh my God, you look like a girl!’” Moore recalled.

“We talked a bit about what non-binary meant and how I didn’t quite feel 100% like a man all the time,” he further explained. “The best bit about it for me was when I was about to put them to bed I asked whether they wanted a bedtime story or if they wanted to see more photos of me, and they both wanted to see more photos.”

He and partner Alex sometimes head out wearing dresses together, but the pair had been uncertain as to how to disclose Moore’s non-binary identity to their young kids.

“I debated whether this was something I could completely hide from them, whether we kind of gently introduced them to it, or whether I just dressed like that in front of them from an early, age so that they’re completely normalized for it,” he stated.

“I could never really come to a conclusion,” the dad additionally declared. “I don’t regret not doing it earlier, I think [now] it was probably the right time to do it.”

Moore says he was heartened by his 8-year-old daughter’s reaction, revealing: “She wanted to shout it from the rooftops. She wanted to go and tell her friends in school.”

However, the brave dad cautioned the youngster against doing so, saying: “I am very conscious that it’s a really scary time to be non-binary.”

Still, the father says he is happy to have finally shared his secret with the kids and wants to soon take them to Pride events.
