Danny Boyle to direct hip-hop stage version of ‘The Matrix’

Ever wondered what “The Matrix” would be like if it incorporated hip-hop choreography?

Academy Award-winning director Danny Boyle apparently did and is bringing that vision — titled “Free Your Mind” — to a Manchester arts venue, the new Factory International, in 2023.

The Warner Bros. Theater Ventures-licensed project is described as a “large-scale immersive performance” that will debut next October, Variety reported on Thursday.

Multitalented composer Michael “Mikey J” Asante will work on the music for the show while Kenrick “H2O” Sandy will handle choreography.

Boyle’s longtime collaborator Tracey Seaward will produce, while poet-playwright Sabrina Mahfouz will help write, and artist Es Devlin will provide large sculptures.

“Combining the hip-hop choreography of hundreds of dancers with the latest immersive design, ‘Free Your Mind’ will take audiences on a thrilling journey through ‘The Matrix’ and into a new realm of possibilities,” the logline reads, according to the outlet.

“This eye-opening production will stretch across the building’s ultra-flexible spaces, responding to them and harnessing the collective energy of the moment,” it ended.

The venture isn’t as random as one may initially think. Boyle won Best Director at the 2009 Oscars for “Slumdog Millionaire.” In 2012, he directed the London Olympic Games opening ceremony, and as part of that gig, directed Queen Elizabeth II and Daniel Craig in a James Bond-themed skit.

Keanu Reeves, 58, has been a part of “The Matrix” franchise since its first installment in 1999. The most recent film, “The Matrix Resurrections,” was bumped up from a 2022 release to a 2021 date. It had a duel-release in theaters and on HBO Max — which made the film’s co-producer Village Roadshow Entertainment Group take Warner Bros. to court, claiming that was a breach of contract.

The Post has contacted reps for Reeves to find out if he’ll be learning any hip-hop for the new show.
