Dave Chapelle slams San Francisco during surprise comedy show: report

Looks like Dave Chapelle isn’t too fond of the Golden State these days.

While doing a surprise performance in San Francisco on Thursday evening at the Masonic Auditorium, the controversial comedian expressed his contempt for the city, asking the crowd a very important question.

“What the f—k happened to this place?” he asked during his set, according to SFGATE’s review of the show.

During the performance, Chapelle, 49, spoke about the homelessness problem in San Francisco, and allegedly told a story about seeing someone poop right in front of the restaurant he was about to dine at.

According to a February 2023 report by the Public Policy Institute of California, 30% of all people who experienced homelessness last year in the United States resided in California.

Chapelle also said that The Bay Area had become “half ‘Glee,’ half zombie movie,” and joked that they needed “a Batman,” the outlet reported.

However, his take on San Fran wasn’t all bad – before he got into all the reasons why he didn’t seem to like being there in the beginning of the show, he referred to the city as his second home.

He explained that early on in his comedy career he would perform there a lot – hundreds of times, in fact.

The outlet also noted that there were no special guests to join him this time around – not even Twitter scion Elon Musk, whom he brought out on stage the last time he was in San Francisco.

In June, Chapelle will be making his way to Pennsylvania for two shows, but it’s unclear if he’ll be touching down in New York City anytime soon.

Over the past few years, the comedian has been marked by some controversies – including one this past November, which took place while he hosted “Saturday Night Live.”

Chappelle’s appearance led some staff writers at the late-night show to boycott the episode before he even showed up.

During his opening monologue on SNL, he spoke about the antisemitism coming from Kanye West and Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving at the time, and made some unsavory “jokes” about it all.

“I’ve been to Hollywood — don’t want you to get mad at me, I’m just telling you I’ve been to Hollywood, this is just what I saw,” he said at one point during the monologue, while also stating that he denounced antisemitism in “all forms.” “It’s a lot of Jews.”

The appearance drew backlash from many, including the head of the Anti-Defamation League, Jonathan Greenblatt.

“We shouldn’t expect @DaveChappelle to serve as society’s moral compass, but disturbing to see @nbcsnl not just normalize but popularize #antisemitism,” Greenblatt tweeted after the fact.

In 2021, Chapelle was also embroiled in controversy after the release of his Netflix standup special called, “The Closer,” where he made jokes about the transgender community.

In it, he declared himself to be a “trans-exclusionary radical feminist” while talking about “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling.

Last May, he was attacked by an audience member who was armed with a fake gun that had a real knife inside while performing at The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.

He was performing there as part of the “Netflix Is a Joke” festival.
