Derek Hough gives update after wife Hayley Erbert’s second brain surgery
Derek Hough revealed his wife, fellow professional dancer Hayley Erbert, successfully underwent her second brain surgery on Thursday after needing an “emergency craniectomy.”
“With immense relief, gratitude and overwhelming joy I’d like to share that Hayley’s cranioplasty surgery has been successfully completed as planned,” Hough, 38, wrote on Instagram, along with a picture of him sitting at his wife’s hospital bed.
Erbert, 29, who received the surgery where doctors removed a portion of the skull to help relieve extra pressure on the brain, was not pictured.
“My sincere appreciation goes to the exceptional medical team. Their expertise and steady hands were pivotal in this journey, ensuring a smooth and successful surgery,” the “Dancing with the Stars” judge concluded.
On Dec. 7, Hough shocked fans when he announced Erbert was hospitalized with a intracranial hematoma diagnosis — a collection of blood within the skull. He revealed she had become “disoriented” after a performance on their “Symphony of Dance” tour.
“It was a time filled with uncertainty and fear, going from living our dreams onstage, to a nightmare in an instant,” Hough reflected on the scary situation after she received the first procedure. He called her recovery process “nothing short of a miracle.”
An intracranial hematoma is caused by trauma to the head, including a fall or car crash. The dancing duo were involved in a car accident last December, but have not addressed whether it contributed to Erbert’s current diagnosis.
Erbert received stitches around her eyebrow at the time, but the couple appeared to not be injured otherwise.
Hough and Erbert appeared on “DWTS” (as a pro and troupe member, respectively) while Hough recently concluded Season 32 as a judge. They married in August after seven years of dating.
