DeSantis says Trump ‘can’t get the job done’
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis warned that former President Donald Trump would be heading for another election defeat should he become the Republican nominee for president in 2024.
“I don’t think he can win the election. I could win the election… I don’t think he can actually get the job done that we need to do,” DeSantis said during an appearance on “Real Time with Bill Maher” on Friday. “We need accountability for what this government did to this country with the Covid restrictions, mandates, and lockdowns. Donald Trump is not going to do that.”
Maher and DeSantis found themselves in broad agreement over the coronavirus pandemic, a top talking point for the GOP governor.
DeSantis has boasted about curbing lockdowns and opening schools faster than almost any other state.
“You did handle it better … You were more right and they won’t give you credit for it,” Maher said. “That’s the part of you I like.”
Maher was critical of some aspects of DeSantis’ record in Florida and took particular aim at his past support for 2020 election deniers like Kari Lake — now running for a Senate seat in Arizona.
“You campaigned for election deniers in 2022. This I cannot forgive — to quote The Godfather,” Maher said.
The governor shot back that “in 2016 your friends in Hollywood were cutting ads telling the Electoral College to vote against Trump in the Electoral College because it was stolen. They said Russia stole the election. For years they said that. So don’t act like this is a unique thing in the modern history of the country.”
The governor repeatedly earned applause from Maher’s liberal audience.
