Disney reveals release date for live-action ‘Pinocchio’
Disney has a release date for the live-action remake of the 1940 animated classic movie “Pinocchio.”
The film will premiere exclusively on Disney+ on Sept. 8, 2022.
Disney also dropped the first trailer for the musical starring Tom Hanks, 65, as Geppetto and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, 41, as Jiminy Cricket during “Good Morning America” on Tuesday.
The first look teases, but does not show, the doll.
“Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight,” Geppetto (Hanks) says in the teaser trailer. “I wish I may, I wish I might, have the wish I wish tonight.”
Robert Zemeckis’ “Pinocchio” also stars Cynthia Erivo as the Blue Fairy, Keegan-Michael Key as “Honest” John, Lorraine Bracco as new character Sofia the Seagull, Luke Evans as the Coachman and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as the voice of Pinocchio.
Evans, 43, told the “D23 Inside Disney” podcast last year that his character is nothing like the animated film.
“Things are not going to be the same as they were in the animation. The storyline is very, very similar, but there were some characters that [Zemeckis] was able to dramatically enhance, and the Coachman is one of those,” he said.
The release of “Pinocchio” is timed to premiere on Disney+ Day, a celebration of the streaming service, which leads into D23 Expo: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, set for Sept. 8-10, which will feature “special experiences for fans and subscribers,” according to Variety.
Disney is expected to announce more Disney+ Day premieres “in the coming months,” according to Variety.
The original animated version of “Pinocchio” is currently streaming on the platform.
