Dolly Parton’s former home sells after 12 years for sale

Dolly Parton’s longtime Tennessee home where she lived with her husband, Carl Dean, as she shot to stardom quietly sold for $849,000 after spending years on the market, The Post has learned.

The pair purchased the four-bedroom, two-bathroom Nashville property in 1980 for $50,000 — or about $190,400 in today’s dollars.

They later sold the home 16 years later, in 1996, for $140,000, which equals some $269,000 today.

Since 2010, the home has gone on and off the market from the same owners who purchased the home from Parton and Dean. It first listed for $359,000.

Over the next several years, it saw several price cuts. Following the competitive housing market and inflation, the home finally sold on Dec. 22, 2021.

It appears the outdated nature of the home may have contributed to its time spent on the market.

This marks the second owner since the singer, actress and philanthropist moved out.

During her time in the home, Parton was already known for her songs “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You,” which Elvis Presley showed interest in wanting to record, and Parton herself was interested in working with Presley. But when his manager, Col. Tom Parker, told her it would be standard procedure to sign over half of her publishing rights to any song recorded by Presley, Parton refused. This led her to profit millions of dollars in royalties from the song over the years.

When Parton first moved into the home in 1980, her theme song for the feature film “9 to 5,” not only reached No. 1 on the country chart — but also on the pop and adult-contemporary charts.

Spanning 4,795 square feet, the property is situated on 2.4 acres of land.

Dubbed a “unique two-story home,” the upstairs of the home had been a successful “owner-occupied Bed n Breakfast named ‘Dolly’s Getaway,’ ” according to the previous listing.

There is also a separate guest house and a detached studio used for an online business.

“Pictures taken prior to online business and after Bed n Breakfast closed,” the listing adds.

Meanwhile, while Parton and her husband of 56 years were living in the fairly modest home, they were building their “dream home” in Brentwood only 20 minutes away — despite not having the finances to do so yet.

“My husband Carl and me was dreamin’ fools about a house,” she said in an interview she gave for the book “Dolly on Dolly.” “Every year we’d drive down to Mississippi for our anniversary with this old camera and we’d take pictures of parts of the Southern mansions we liked. A porch here, a pillar there. Then we’d take ’em home and look at ’em real hard, puttin’ it all together in our minds.”

“I knew that house before it was built and I built it long before we could afford it ’cause I knew we’d be able to — someday,” she said. “I scouted all over Tennessee for a piece of land with hills in front and a stream around it,” she said.

“It’s got a bitty bridge, and I made sure it’s just narrow enough so’s no tour bus can git over it. Carl and me can walk around stark naked there and nobody’d see. We have chickens and cows and a vegetable garden. It’s a quiet, homey place for me and the special people in my life.”

Her current home/farm spans over 8,100 square feet and is situated on over 62 acres of land.

Over the years they installed a bath house, a gazebo, a swimming pool and tennis courts, according to development records obtained by The Post.
