Dominant Germany claim mixed relay gold at Luge World Cup ahead of Austria and USA

Germany continued their Luge World Cup dominance with victory in a historic mixed team relay in Whistler.

A women’s doubles leg was included for the first time in the opening relay of 2023/24 and the unstoppable German team of Julia Taubitz, Max Langenhan, Jessica Degenhardt/Cheyenne Rosenthal and Tobias Wendl/Tobias Arlt, all of whom won their respective singles and doubles events over the weekend, combined for success.

A time of 2:48.665 across the four runs saw them finish 0.56s clear of Austria, with USA claiming bronze after a late mistake by Latvia in the women’s doubles proved costly, dropping them to fifth behind both the Americans and Italy.

Kindl said: “Unfortunately, we had a small mistake in the relay but thanks to the women’s doubles and the rest of the team, they pulled us out of it.

“I think we showed a good team performance.”

Taubitz had earlier won the women’s singles as part of an all-German podium.

The three-time world champion clocked 1:18.066 across her two runs, putting her clear of compatriots Anna Berreiter and Merle Fraebel.
