Dominic Thiem suffers upset against Next Gen prospect Hamad Medjedovic at Swiss Open

Dominic Thiem suffered a defeat at the hands of Hamad Medjedovic at the EFG Swiss Open Gstaad on Wednesday afternoon.

The Serbian secured a 7-5 2-6 6-3 victory to reach the first quarter-final of his ATP tour career.

Medjedovic, who celebrated his 20th birthday on Tuesday, needed more than two hours to battle past the former world No. 3 to secure victory and was helped by the Austrian’s forehand troubles.

He won 18 of 24 points against the Austrian’s second serve.

The win moved Medjedovic to eighth in the Pepperstone ATP Live Next Gen Race.

His next match in Switzerland will be against Yannick Hanfmann, the fourth seed.

Hanfmann defeated Daniel Altmaier 4-6 6-2 7-5 in his tie.

Thiem has won the tournament in Gstaad before, in 2015, and he remains in indifferent form, with his best showing a quarter-final run in events in Estoril and Munich.

In other results, Belgium’s Zizou Bergs beat Jurij Rodionov 7-6(8), 4-6, 7-6(4) in just under. The 24-year-old will next playSwiss wild card Dominic Stricker or second seed Seian Miomir Kecmanovic.
