Donald Glover says ‘Community’ film is done: Chevy Chase return?
“Community” will be back sooner than fans anticipate.
A movie based on the hit NBC sitcom that concluded in 2015 is coming soon — and already has a completed script, according to star Donald Glover.
The 40-year-old actor told Entertainment Tonight on Wednesday that he just recently heard that the screenplay is ready.
“I was told that the script — literally, I was texting today — I was told that the script was done,” Glover, who portrayed former high school star quarterback Troy Barnes, said.
The “Atlanta” creator continued: “I haven’t read it yet.”
“It’s really just a schedule thing [but] I’m in,” he gushed. “I’m all in.”
In 2022, a film continuation of the 2009 series was announced to be in development by Peacock.
Stars Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Jim Rash and Ken Jeong are also set to return.
Last month, Brie, 41, opened up about the movie for the first time during an interview with AP Entertainment.
“I heard a rumor, Joel McHale says we’re filming it this summer, so fingers crossed,” she said. “He said it first and I’m just reiterating. But I hope so. I hope that we do it this summer. I’m really excited.”
Original cast member Chevy Chase most likely won’t be joining his former co-stars, however.
Chase, 80, appeared as rich man Pierce Hawthorne for four seasons and was fired in 2012 after his alleged misbehavior on set.
Glover claimed to the New Yorker in 2018 that Chase called him the “N-word” and was racist toward him. In response, Chase told the outlet: “I am saddened to hear that Donald perceived me in that light.”
In February 2022, he further addressed claims that he was difficult to work.
“I don’t give a crap!” he laughed during an interview with CBS Sunday Morning at the time.
“I am who I am. And I like where — who I am. I don’t care,” he said. “And it’s part of me that I don’t care. And I’ve thought about that a lot. And I don’t know what to tell you, man. I just don’t care.”
The “Saturday Night Live” alum has always been vocal about his disdain for the series, more recently slamming the show in September 2023.
He told Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast that the comedy wasn’t “funny enough” and wished he never joined the cast.
“They wanted me. So I said, ‘OK,’ ” Chase said about the show’s producers.
“Everyone had their bits and stuff,” the “National Lampoon” actor went on. “I thought they were all good, but it just wasn’t hard-hitting enough for me.”
