Dylan Mulvaney fires back at trolls amid Bud Light controvery
Controversial TikTok sensation Dylan Mulvaney fired back at critics Tuesday, accusing them of bullying her because she’s an “easy target.”
As a guest on the “Onward with Rosie O’Donnell” podcast, Mulvaney said her trolls intentionally twist her words and actions in an effort to blast the transgender community.
“The reason that I think I am so…I’m an easy target is because I’m so new to this,” Mulvaney said. “I think going after a trans woman that’s been doing this for like 20 years is a lot more difficult. I think maybe they think that there’s some sort of chance with me … But what is their goal?”
“These people, they don’t understand me and anything that I do or say then somehow gets taken out of context and is used against me and it’s so sad because everything I try to put out is positive. It’s trying to connect with others that maybe don’t understand me. It’s to make people laugh or to make a kid feel seen.”
Mulvaney — who has amassed over 10 million followers for chronicling her transition into “girlhood” — sparked national controversy after Bud Light and Nike announced her as their newest spokesperson.
The trans activist revealed on April 1 that the beer company sent packs of Bud Light featuring her face as a way to celebrate her first full year as an out-and-proud trans woman. Days later, she announced her partnership with Nike with a post of herself sporting the brand’s clothing.
Conservatives accused the brands of pushing “gender propaganda” and triggered boycotts across the country.
Fellow trans woman Caitlyn Jenner slammed Nike for going “woke” and country music singer John Rich pulled cases of Bud Light from his Nashville bar.
Though Mulvaney refrained from mentioning any names, O’Donnell had no issue slamming Kid Rock for posting a video of himself shouting “F— Bud Light and f— Anheuser-Busch!” while using cases of the drinks for target practice.
“Beer companies have been supportive of the LGBTQIA community for decades. This is not the first time. Who do you think sponsors pride? Gay people, trans people, we drink beer, too, man. Put down your gun, Kid Rock, it’s in bad taste,” she said.
Mulvaney told the actress she had “tried to be the most uncontroversial person this past year” but still fell victim to criticism because of the country’s polarizing opinions on transgenderism.
The TikToker said anti-trans bigots snatch every chance they get to “shame” trans people and individuals who associate with them in an effort to stifle the community — she pointed to her visit to the Drew Barrymore, which sparked controversy after the host knelt in front of Mulvaney in an intimate moment.
“It’s just a heavy time. And it’s time to step up, for sure,” she said, adding that she doesn’t let the trolls’ behavior affect her.
Mulvaney’s chat with O’Donnell marked the first time the influencer publicly spoke about the mounting backlash.
She took a shot at her critics last week by breaking out into song — she shared a video of herself singing the Stephen Sondheim tune “No One is Alone” from “Into the Woods.”
“It’s hard to see the light now, just don’t let it go. This song felt fitting for the week I’ve been having,” Mulvaney captioned the post.
“Thank you all for making me feel supported, i am not alone️️#trans.”
