Ed Sheeran, Alanis Morissette sub on ‘American Idol’ for Katy Perry, Lionel Richie
Controversial “American Idol” judge Katy Perry is taking a break — and being replaced by Alanis Morissette and Ed Sheeran on the judge’s panel.
Perry’s hiatus from the show comes as fans have repeatedly slammed the 38-year-old for waging “psychological warfare” on contestants.
Don’t get your hopes up, haters: Perry and co-judge Lionel Richie are only out temporarily as they head to the UK to perform at the coronation for King Charles III.
Sheeran, 32, and Morrissette, 48, were announced as the “big time” guest judges on Sunday’s episode of “Idol” and will join country star, Luke Bryan, as the competitors are whittled down to the top 5.
Perry’s hiatuas from the show comes as several fans have slammed the 38-year-old for her rude on-stage behavior.
“Next week some huge happenings, Lionel and Katy are off to the UK to perform in the coronation of King Charles III,” said host Ryan Seacrest, 48, to applause from the audience. “What an honor.”
Seacrest then asks the judges and audience members if they would like to find out who will be filling in for Perry and Richie, to which they both agree.
“I am so excited to be mentoring you and hearing your interpretations of my songs,” gushed Morrissette in a pre-recorded video. “And surprise, I will be guest judging with Luke as well!”
Sheeran also expressed his joy over being asked to judge.
“I cannot wait to guide you through this stage of the competition and career,” said the “Bad Habits” singer who revealed it was his first time judging on the show. “I hope you are having a great time and see you very, very soon.”
The Post reached out to both Sheeran and Morrissette for comment.
Seacrest revealed that each star will also perform one of their own hits, with Sheeran singing his new single “Boat,” while Morrissette belts out one of her classics.
Bryan initially teased the appearance of the duo by saying that a couple of “big time” Hollywood stars will be filling in.
“It’s big time. It’s big time,” the country star told Entertainment Tonight. “The people that we have filling in, contestants have used their songs many, many times. A lot more than mine!”
However, Perry, 38, and Richie, 73, won’t be totally gone from “Idol” as they both plan to check in on the competition from Windsor Castle on “Idol Live.”
The invitation from the future king seemingly came at a fortuitous time for the “ET” singer who has continued to anger fans of the show.
Fans of the show have slammed Perry recently for being “dismissive” of contestants as well as “waging psychological warfare” on singers.
Perry was also slammed last month for “mom shaming” 25-year-old Sara Beth Liebe who eventually quit the show.
The “TGIF” singer was also booed for criticizing another hopeful’s glittery costume.
Fans of the venerable singing competition are divided over the news of Perry’s short departure from the show.
“Bottom line … Katy made a statement that was rude and uncalled for. It had nothing to do with singing,” commented one fan of the show on a Page Six Instagram post. “Simon [Cowell] only told them how bad they were. Not on their [sic] personal life.”
“Temporarily? So people just forget what a jackass she is?” another wrote. “Tiger doesn’t change its stripes.”
Other people defended the “I Kissed a Girl” singer.
“Get there h-l out of here … Simon Cowell was WAYYYYYYYY worse and he never got replaced! People being offended,” slammed one Instagram user.
“Katy Perry is the best! This is the best trio ever, and they cannot get rid of any of them. They’re very positive,” another fan claimed.
“Nothing but trolls coming out of the wood work. Katy Perry is very sweet … she is just giving constructive criticism and people nowadays cannot and do not get it!” a third fan.
“American Idol” airs Sundays at 8 p.m. on ABC.
