Elon Musk mocks Senate Democrats for calling for FTC to investigate Twitter

Twitter CEO Elon Musk took a shot at Senate Democrats on Friday after several members penned a letter to the Federal Trade Commission asking they investigate any potential consent decree or consumer protection laws violated by the social media giant.

Musk mocked the senators for calling for the probe while remaining mum on the historic implosion of the crypto currency exchange company FTX, which has declared bankruptcy after losing billions of dollars.

He made his case by tweeting a meme showing two Rhinoceroses mating behind a wildlife photographer who’s paying no mind to the scene.

“Senators calling to investigate Twitter,” says the text over the photographer.

“FTX losing a billion dollars of client funds,” it says over the rhinos.

On Thursday, seven Democrats sent a letter to FTC Chair Lina Khan, accusing Twitter of “serious, willful disregard for the safety and security of its users” and alleged Musk has “taken alarming steps that have undermined the integrity and safety of the platform,” since his $44 Billion takeover, Fox Business reported.

The letter was signed by Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn), Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Ed Markey (D-Mass.), Bob Menendez (D-N.J.). and Cory Booker (D-N.J.).

FTX underwent a $16 billion collapse amid reports that co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried had been funneling money to a sister trading company run by his girlfriend. The company has reportedly lost as much as $2 billion or more in missing customer funds.

In a court filing earlier this week, FTX’s lawyers said there were already more than 100,000 claims against the company and estimated that figure could grow to more than 1 million, most of them customers, once the bankruptcy case is complete.
