Elon Musk’s drug use has executives at his companies concerned: report

Elon Musk has used illegal drugs at parties and appeared drugged at events, worrying executives and board members of his various companies, a new bombshell report claims.

The 52 world richest man allegedly used LSD, cocaine, ecstasy, and magic mushrooms at bashes across the globe — where fellow ragers must sign nondisclosure agreements or surrender their phones to attend, people who have witnessed his drug use told The Wall Street Journal.

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO has also publicly smoked marijuana and has admitted to taking ketamine to treat his depression.

Musk took several tabs of acid at a party he hosted in Los Angeles in 2018. The following year he indulged in magic mushrooms at an event in Mexico and in 2021 he took ketamine recreationally with his brother, Kimbal Musk, at a Miami house party, the Journal reported.

Such drug use by Musk would have the potential to threaten his position at his publicly traded companies, where shareholders would prefer not to have a CEO on drugs making key decisions. SpaceX, while private, has a number of federal contracts that forbid drug use, the Journal said.

In total, Musk is allegedly putting at risk roughly $1 trillion in assets held by investors as well as tens of thousands of jobs.

Musk himself didn’t respond to the Journal for the story, but his spokesman, Alex Spiro said he was regularly drug tested and and never failed. He also said “there are other false facts” in the story but didn’t specify them to the Journal.

While the billionaire is known for his erratic and at times impulsive behavior, some executives noticed a sharp change in 2017 when he slurred through a bizarre, rambling speech in front of hundreds of SpaceX employees, raising questions about his substance use — although there’s no proof he was on drugs.

A witness described the 15-minute remarks as “nonsensical,” “unhinged” and “cringeworthy” — and SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell finally stepped in and took over, the paper reported.

Spiro told the Journal the account of the event was “false as has been confirmed by countless people who were present,” though he did not give the paper details about what was false.

The Post has reached out to Spiro for comment on the Journal’s report.

In 2018, Musk got in trouble after smoking marijuana on camera with podcaster Joe Rogan. The fallout from the video briefly sent Tesla’s stock price plummeting by as much as 9%, bringing the value of the company down by billions of dollars.

Executives were also concerned Musk may have been on drugs when he suddenly tweeted that in 2018 he was planning to take Tesla private — which sparked an SEC investigation into whether the statement was misleading or false, people familiar with the matter told WSJ.

Some close to the billionaire said he was on drugs during a media interview shortly after, in which he got emotional describing how difficult his past year had been, according to the paper.

Musk has attributed his strange behavior to mental illness and lack of sleep from obsessively overseeing his companies. He confirmed in 2017 that he has bipolar disorder — which can cause dramatic mood swings — but said he has not been diagnosed.

He also admitted on social media that he takes ketamine to help with depression and said while hosting Saturday Night Live that he has Asperger’s— a type of Autism.

In Musk’s authorized autobiography published last year, author Walter Isaacson wrote that Musk is prone to “demon-like” outbursts at work in which he lashes out at employees and executives and can “hardly remember” what happened afterward.

Musk is quoted as saying in the book “I really don’t like doing illegal drugs.”
