Elton John testifies in Kevin Spacey’s sexual assault trial
Elton John backed Kevin Spacey on Monday in the Academy Award winner’s sex assault trial in the UK.
The newly retired singer and his husband, David Furnish, appeared in the London court by video link from Monaco and answered questions about Spacey’s attendance at their White Tie and Tiara Ball, an event the couple hosted for over a decade to raise money to fight AIDS.
One of Spacey’s accusers claimed the star aggressively grabbed his crotch while driving to the White Tie and Tiara Ball in either 2004 or 2005 — claims that John countered by telling the court Spacey arrived at the event by private jet.
Spacey, 63, has pleaded not guilty to a dozen charges that include sexual assault and indecent assault against four men in their 20s and 30s between 2001 and 2013.
The “American Beauty” actor has denied assaulting the man on the way to the ball, saying, “No, I was not on a suicide mission in any of those years,” the Guardian reported.
The complainant, who was not named, claimed the “House of Cards” star grabbed his crotch with such strength that he almost crashed his car.
The alleged victim’s claims, however, were countered by John’s testimony. The singer recalled Spacey flying in to attend the event on a private jet.
Furnish told the court that Spacey’s attendance was a big deal at the time.
“He was an Oscar-winning actor and there was a lot of buzz and excitement that he was at the ball,” Furnish said.
Furnish also testified that Spacey did not attend the annual party the year the accuser said he was attacked — and supported the actor’s claims that he had only attended the party once, in 2001.
He said photographs showed Spacey was only in attendance that year, as each year they make sure to photograph each guest and the actor only appeared in images from 2001.
When asked if it was possible that celebrities could ask to not be photographed at the event, Furnish said that was never the case.
“It never happened,” he said. “It was understood we were promoting a charity involving the eradication of stigma surrounding disease. For celebrities wanting to come to our event, it was always understood they needed to be photographed.”
John said he only remembered Spacey attending the event once, during which he bought a Mini Cooper to benefit the Elton John AIDS Foundation. The singer also confirmed that Spacey spent the night at their home following the party.
While the accuser conceded he may have gotten the year wrong, he insisted he wouldn’t have forgotten the incident because he said he nearly caused him to crash his car.
The alleged victim said that Spacey fondled him over several years, beginning in the early 2000s, but the incident involving John and Furnish’s party was the final occasion.
Spacey said he and the alleged victim were friends and engaged in some romantic contact, but the accuser was straight so Spacey said he respected his wishes to never take the relationship further.
Furnish said he was familiar with the alleged victim and described him as “charming,” the same term Spacey used in describing him.
Spacey could face jail if convicted — but hopes for a career comeback if acquitted.
The trial is expected to last four weeks.
Once one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, Spacey ducked out of the limelight since being accused of sexual misconduct six years ago.
Last October, he won a sex abuse case brought against him in Manhattan, when jurors sided with him in finding that his accuser didn’t prove his claim that the actor made an unwanted sexual advance at him when he was 14.
