Emma Raducanu handed Miami Open wild card as she prepares for tennis return following tonsillitis

Emma Raducanu has been handed a wild card for the Miami Open later this month.

Raducanu has not played since losing to Coco Gauff in the second round of the Australian Open, as she contracted tonsillitis which forced her to miss this week’s ATX Open in Texas.

However, she will return to action next week at Indian Wells, which begins on March 6, before travelling to Miami for the second Masters event of the season on March 20.

The 20-year-old is currently ranked 80 in the world, having played just two tournaments this year.

“Hey guys, it’s Emma here,” she said in a video message. “I’m really looking forward to coming to Miami for the Miami 2023 Open and I look forward to seeing you there.”

Raducanu is currently working with her fifth different coach Sebastien Sachs, who guided Belinda Bencic to Olympic gold at Tokyo 2020 and has previously worked with former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka and Germany’s Julia Gorges.

The British No. 1’s former coach, Dmitry Tursunov is confident Raducanu will “figure it out”.

“Sooner or later, she’s just going to sort it out,” Tursunov told the Craig Shapiro Podcast. She’s too smart of a person not to sort it out you know. She loves tennis too much not to figure it out.

“It’s just a question of how long it’s going to take her and how difficult the road is going to be. But, I think she’s the person who is willing to go a bumpy road.

“She needs to develop her game to more all around. She needs to develop these weapons that are not super powerful. To develop that it takes more time.

“Is she going to allow that time for some of those changes to occur? If the road is too long then you might just abandon it halfway thinking you are not going to get there; does she have the patience to go through with it and does she have the right people around her to help navigate those roads?”
