Born in London, Cohen spent his entire playing career with Fulham, making 459 appearances between 1956 and 1969.
The club erected a statue of the player in his honour outside their Craven Cottage home in 2016.
“Everyone associated with Fulham Football Club is desperately saddened to learn of the passing of one of our greatest ever players – and gentlemen – George Cohen MBE,” wrote a statement on the club’s website.
He was awarded an MBE in 2000, alongside other members of the 1966 England World Cup squad.
“George won 37 caps for England during his international career and was vice-captain of our World Cup winning team in 1966.
“We would like to pass on our deep condolences to George’s family and friends at this sad time.”
The England website said a full tribute to Cohen will be paid at Wembley on March 26 when the Three Lions take on Ukraine in a European Championship Qualifier.
