England facing big chase in second Test after Australia dominate third day at Lord’s before rain

England are likely facing a big run chase to win the second Ashes Test after Australia dominated the third day at Lord’s.

England started the day with a chance to get close to Australia’s first-innings score of 416, but slumped from 278-4 to 325 all out.

Usman Khawaja (58*) led Australia’s patient response as they ground down England’s attack to finish on 130-2, a lead of 221.

Play was called off 90 minutes early due to rain.

Australia lead the five-Test series 1-0 following victory at Egbaston.

Having fought back with a strong batting display on the second day, England lost captain Ben Stokes off the second ball of the third day for 17.

Harry Brook was also caught soon after reaching 50 as he went on the attack against a short ball from Mitchell Starc (3-88).

Jonny Bairstow chipped to Pat Cummins to leave England seven down and the tail didn’t offer much resistance as Ollie Robinson (9) and Stuart Broad (12) were both dismissed in the same over by part-time spinner Travis Head (2-17).

Josh Tongue (1) was the last to go when he was snaffled at short leg.

Australia made a positive start to their response as they passed 60 without loss.

Just as in the first innings it was Tongue (1-21) who made the breakthrough for England as he had David Warner trapped lbw for 25.

Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne continued to frustrate England and pushed the Australia lead past 200.

Broad did have Labuschagne trapped in front but the umpire did not raise his finger and England didn’t appeal.

Eventually Jimmy Anderson (1-41) made the breakthrough as Labuschagne (30) was caught by Harry Brook.

England pressed for further wickets in gloomy conditions but Khawaja and Steve Smith (6*) held firm.
