England v West Indies – As it happened: Second ODI from Antigua as England beat West Indies by six wickets

“I’ve been searching for some form so great to spend some time in the middle, Buttler said on TNT Sports. “There’s no substitute for that, so it’s nice to get the team over the line.

“It’s really pleasing. I’ve been playing for a while now and its great when you can get to those milestones when you’ve been consistent for a long time.

“I’ve had that it’s been a frustrating time and I’ve really been getting fed up with that so it’s just time to put in a performance to get back to the player I know I am.

“It’s great to be in those situations. Must-win game today and we put in a brilliant performance so we’ll look forward to getting to Barbados for the decider.”

His early three-wicket burst put England in control.

“It was a tough day the other day but you can bounce back and that’s what we did today,” Curran said on TNT Sports.

“Here there’s quite a big breeze and I didn’t find the ball swung much so I just tried to change the angles and luckily they edged them.

“We did so many things right in the first game we just had to come back today and put things right and that’s what we did.”

Harry Brook (43) sweeps Gudakesh Motie for four to confirm England’s victory, in all he put on 90 with Jos Buttler (58 not out) as England breached the target of 203 with 17.1 overs to spare.

An edge from Buttler sends the first ball of the over through the vacant slip area and away for four and then he brings up his fifty with a beautiful straight drive high over mid off, before hitting another through mid-wicket. He also hits the 5,000 ODI run mark. One run away now.

Brook hits a boundary off the first ball of the over, they both look like they want to get the job done quickly now.

Rutherford comes into bowl. The energy in the field is lacking now and thoughts turn to Saturday for the deciding match in Barbados. Buttler clips the last ball of the over for four with Carty unable to keep the ball in the field of play.

The two prepared to nurdle around Shepherd. Just over 30 runs away now.

A fifty partnership for the pair is brought up from 48 balls.

Two trademark sixes from Buttler rolling the wrists and smacking Cariah high over long on.

A good over from Motie, but this looks like it is is only going one way now.

Brook now lets lose smacking the last ball from Cariah way back over his head for a maximum.

The drought is ended with Buttler pulling the first ball of Joseph’s over for four. Nine off the over and the pressure seems off now.

It is now 28 balls since the last boundary but the England pair do well to nudge Cariah around for five runs.

Joseph comes back into bowl and is on point with Brook and Buttler content just to defend…for now.

Buttler really struggling with Cariah even hitting one with the back of his bat, before he pushes down the ground for three.

Buttler gets off the mark first ball.

That is the big wicket. Now we have a game. Rutherford followed the blueprint bowling into the pitch on off stump getting a little movement off the surface which trapped Jacks in front.

Caraih gets his first bowl and the first one is a beautiful leg spinner which beats Jacks all ends up. The second one is short and legside and Jacks hammers it over the mid-wicket boundary. The rest of the over was very good.

Rutherford comes into bowl and follows the banging it in, slightly short with cross-seam direction, but strays to leg side and Jacks turns him to fine leg for four.

It took until his 11th ball but finally Brook unleashes the shackles, getting his leg out the way and bashing the ball over wide long on.

Again Thomas keeping the pressure up. Just 17 runs from the last 31 balls.

Brook off the mark with a push down the ground. You would argue you wanted a mid off rather than long off to deny him that easy run. Good over from Motie though.

Thomas doing the right thing now, banging the ball in just slightly short of a length and suddenly Jacks is struggling to get it away.

The big-hitter joins Jacks at the crease but he nearly falls first ball as an edge drops a little short of King at slip.

Jacks scythes Motie to record another boundary through the leg side. But then Duckett is caught as he misses a sweep and the ball clips his glove gifting an easy catch to Hope.

Jacks brings up his half-century off 43 balls. He then almost runs himself out then has to wear a throw on the back of his leg.

Could this wicket bring the Windies back into the game? If they get Jacks, that could change things….

Annoying for Crawley as he inside-edges as he looks to carve a ball through the offside clipping his leg stump.

Thomas comes into bowl and his fourth cherry is a wide slow ball is begging to be hit which Jacks does for his third six.

Three singles off this over from Motie.

A short-pitched ball is smacked high over long leg by Jacks. They really would be better pitching a good length where the bounce can be variable rather than into the pitch where it usually has held up and asked to be hit.

Motie comes into bowl and is punished for a short-pitched ball which Jacks crashes through the covers.

Crawley joins Jacks at the crease and gets off the mark straight away.

The next ball Salt is bowled, he looks at the pitch to try and work out how he missed it. He was late on the shot

Fifty off 34 balls an incredible effort.

Huge bouncer from Joseph rises wickedly and was too good for Jacks to get a touch on, bouncing over the head of Hope. The next ball Jacks swipes at and it flies high over long leg and then plays a lovely shot just wide of point for another boundary.

A better over from Shepherd conceding just two runs.

Jacks a lucky man! He drove the first ball far away from his body but the edge was too wide for slip and went for four. Salt gets a much better boundary leaning back and carving over point one bounce for four.

Jacks off the mark, Shepherd not looking too dangerous.

Salt looking to make quick work of the target but he was lucky with his second four edging Joseph over slip’s head.

Curran (3-33), Livingstone (3-39), Atkinson (2-28) and Ahmed (2-40) shared the wickets around.

“[Hope] has obviously been playing really well the last couple of years,” Livingstone said.

“We know he’s their big wicket, we know it we can get him out we’re halfway there to bowling them out.

On Sam Curran’s turnaround:

“I’m happy for Sam. Any time it can happen when you’re bowling tough overs into the wind.

Joseph top-edges the first ball from Atkinson and Buttler just fails to catch after sprinting back near the boundary. Then another short-pitched ball is clouted straight up in the air and he gleefully takes the catch.

Livingstone was lucky with a couple of wickets, with the batsmen playing poor shots but this was a beauty.

Ahmed was one of England’s few bright points from the first innings and he has got reward for good bowling again today. The first maiden of the innings if I’m not wrong there.

He knew he’d be able to get Motie. Again he floated one up and the ball was struck high for an easy catch to Curran.

Atkinson back into bowl and a hook through the leg side brings up the two hundred. With the old ball it does seem to be holding up on the pitch. Joseph had an age to play that shot.

Ahmed tempting Motie by floating them up for him to swing at, but the last is a full toss which the number ten sweeps for four.

He deserved that wicket Ahmed. Shepherd only a couple of yards from clearing cow corner but Crawley with safe hands take the catch.

Shepherd not falling for the Livingstone hype paddling the ball to fine leg for four and then hitting three more, one paddle to fine leg, then smashing another over the covers, before a fourth of the over comes via a sweep.

Joseph not really reading Ahmed but heaved the fifth ball which was close to being out and close to a six but Crawley falling over the boundary just managed to flick it back into play.

After the disaster of the first ODI, England’s bowlers have certainly shown up today in Antigua.

What a game Livingstone is having! Hope played to the line of middle stump and it struck the off stump. England in total control now.

Ahmed back into the game with two right handers at the crease and just concedes three singles.

Hope holding out err… hope for someone to give him some support so he can bat out the next 18 overs.

He just missed a straight one. Livingstone with the golden arm today.

A good first five balls from Curran but he over-pitches the last and Cariah gets off the mark banging it low and hard down the ground.

A much-needed wicket for England from their fifth bowler.

A very disappointing end to the innings of Rutherford. Just pushing in the air through on the offside and Salt takes the catch diving at short cover.

Curran comes back into the attack, after he took 3-19 in his first five overs. Hope times a beautiful push down the ground for a boundary.

A much prettier four from Rutherford crunching Livingstone to the boundary with a classic extra cover drive says David Gower (and he would know) and then he smashes another down the ground to overtake Hope.

After five dot balls from Ahmed, Rutherford slogs off the back foot high into the air which goes all the way to the stands.

Livingstone gets his first bowl of the match. The pair bring their 100-partnership up off 116 balls.

Not the best over from Ahmed but even these two set batsmen are struggling to get him off the square.

Hope brings up his fifty off 44 balls. A fantastic effort when his team needed it.

An outside edge broke a run of 29 balls without a boundary. It was controlled by Rutherford but Ahmed will have felt a bit hard done by. A beautifully-flighted wrong un beats Rutherford with the last ball.

Another solid over from Carse, just the three runs off it.

A bit of a fight back from England with Ahmed also just conceding a couple of singles.

Hundred up for West Indies, but a good over there from Carse. The Windies will be delighted after the start they had.

These two happy not to take chances against Ahmed at present.

Jacks looking no threat at all. He goes for nine in that over.

Rehan Ahmed now into the attack. Not to over-emphasise the point Bish made earlier, but it would have been easier for him had he been brought on before these two were in. Still, he found his length immediately and did not let them take the initiative.

The fifty-partnership is brought up by a clip through mid wicket which Livingstone should have stopped on the boundary, but Jacks could have no complaints about the next ball, a full toss on leg stump which was swept for another four.

Wonderful shot from Hope clearing wide long on with the sweetest of baseball-type home run shots.

Jacks looking steady but as Bish said maybe not the attacking option England should have taken.

A good over ruined by the penultimate ball as Carse over pitched and Livingstone couldn’t stop the ball at mid on.

Will Jacks replaces villain to hero Sam Curran, Ian Bishop is a little surprised it was not Rehan Ahmed being given the ball.

Brydon Carse takes over from Curran at the start of Powerplay 2. Lovely clip through the covers gets Rutherford a boundary from the fourth ball of the over.

Atkinson back on a good length in this over. Though it helped Rutherford was facing not Hope. The fifth ball saw Rutherford try to guide the ball to third man but it bounced just in front of Crawley and went to the boundary.

A quiet over after this dramatic start. Rutherford is off the mark.

Maybe Atkinson’s first poor ball of the spell sees Hope drive him straight back the ground when he over-pitched and then a fantastic punch saw the ball travel to the boundary inside mid on. Jacks at extra cover denied him another boundary from the fifth ball, then the last one Curran at mid on got a hand to but could not stop going for four. He is still seeing it like a beach ball.

“Did it swing?” Buttler reviewed a non-decision for leg from the last ball of the over after getting confirmation from the bowler and Curran gets his third wicket.

What a turnaround for Sam Curran and England! Angling the ball across Brandon King who gets an edge and once more Crawley is sure handed at slip.

Atkinson providing very hard to get off the square. Just four runs (and a leg bye from his three overs).

King looks irrepressible but he needs some help, can Hope after his century in the first ODI provide that.

The first ball is short and King carves through the covers once more. It took a fine stop from Brook to deny him another from the third ball, but then the fourth ball sees Carty get a huge nick and Crawley takes the catch above his head to dismiss him for a second ball duck.

Exactly what England wanted after the hundred wicket opening partnership in the first innings.

It was given not out initially but Jos Buttler immediately reviewed and Atkinson gets reward for his fantastic start with his extra bounce snicking the inside edge of Athanaze with the England skipper catching moving to his right.

King with another beautiful drive through the offside from the fourth ball wide of mid off from an over-pitched delivery.

Fine start from Gus Atkinson having Athanaze playing and missing to an outswinger.

A tidy over in the main from Curran but he was hit for four through the covers from the penultimate ball.

He was hammered in the first match, going for nearly ten an over, so he has something to prove today.

After failing to defend a total of 325 on Sunday, England will field first in today’s game.

Thanks for joining our coverage of England’s second of three ODIs in the West Indies and after defeat in the opener, they need victory to avoid a series defeat tonight.

England’s four-wicket defeat in their first ODI against the West Indies in Antigua was perhaps the result – once again – of going into a series without the requisite match practice, reckons ex-England Test skipper Alastair Cook.

“England were poor with the ball,” Cook said on TNT Sports. “Whether we can put this down to a lack of match practice [is unclear].

“No warm-up games, it doesn’t matter how many scenarios you do, a few of the lads were out in Abu Dhabi, they’ve had some scenario practice but under pressure today, they looked rusty.

“They were poor with the new ball new ball. In particular Sam Curran, he’s normally that banker, the guy under pressure, certainly in T20 cricket he’s been so good at the death but he was missing his mark by a long way.

“I expect England to get better but you can’t just keep going into series without match practice.

“I know the schedule is really hard and other things but something has to give to give the players a better chance to perform straight away.”
