Erling Haaland to miss Euro 2024 qualifiers for Norway due to groin injury, out for at least one week

Erling Haaland will miss Norway’s opening Euro 2024 qualifying matches due to a groin injury.

Haaland netted his second hat-trick in five days after scoring three goals during Manchester City’s 6-0 thrashing over Burnley in the FA Cup on Saturday.

He came off the pitch after 63 minutes and tests have shown that he has a groin injury, so will be out for at least one week.

“Erling Braut Haaland had some pain in his groin after the match against Burnley,” read a statement from Norway.

“We hoped that this was just a familiarity that would carry over to Saturday, but after doing tests and examinations yesterday it became clear that he will not make it to the games against Spain and Georgia.

“It is better that he receives medical follow-up at the club, says national team doctor Ola Sand. Haaland thus travels home from the national team meeting.”

Haaland has scored 42 goals in 37 games this season for City but has yet to help Norway qualify for a major tournament, despite scoring 21 times for his country.

When the Premier League returns, City face Liverpool in a match that will be shown live on BT Sport.

Norway have only qualified for the European Championship once in their history, which came in 2000, and begin their qualifying campaign against Spain on Saturday and Georgia next Tuesday.

Manager Stale Solbakken says Haaland’s injury is a loss but his team will remain confident.

“Erling took it hard when he realised that he could not fight for the team,” said Solbakken.

“Fortunately, there is still plenty of self-confidence, talent and cohesion in this group to win points in the next matches.

“We are not going to hang on one millimetre but continue our work to be maximally prepared for Saturday and Tuesday.”
