Ex-inmates Steven Smith, Allah-Son-Allah charged in 1995 Christmas Eve cold case murder of prisoner Michael Jones
Two ex-inmates, including a convicted killer, were charged in the cold case murder of a fellow Sing Sing prisoner who was brutally stabbed to death almost 30 years ago inside the Westchester maximum-security facility.
Inmate Michael Jones, 32, was fatally stabbed in the chest with a buck knife on Christmas Eve in 1995.
The knifing, which punctured his heart, was part of a deadly gang feud involving members of The Five-Percent Nation, Westchester County prosecutors said Tuesday.
After conducting numerous interviews across the country when the probe was jump started again in 2019, Steven Smith, 60, and Allah-Son-Allah, 53, were arrested in connection to the jailhouse slaying, the Westchester district attorney said in a news release.
Smith allegedly directed Allah-Son-Allah, then known as Gwyn Cancer, to fatally attack Jones, prosecutors alleged.
“After 27 years, we have secured an indictment for the murder of Michael Jones, thanks to the phenomenal investigative work by the New York State Police, who never gave up on this case, and the hard work of our Cold Case and Homicide Bureaus,” District Attorney Mimi Rocah said in a statement.
Smith was previously convicted of another murder, but was later paroled in 2018 and was living in North Carolina before he was recently arrested, the district attorney’s office said.
Allah-Son-Allah, who was in Albany before his arrest, was convicted of a criminal possession of a controlled substance in 1994.
He was paroled in 2003, but then had another four-year stint behind bars due to a 2015 drug-sale conviction, the Journal News reported.
Smith is facing two counts of first-degree murder, and a count of second-degree murder.
His prior murder conviction and sentence elevated two of the murder counts to first-degree, the Westchester DA’s office said.
Allah-Son-Allah was hit with two second-degree murder charges.
The victim was serving a 20-40 year prison term for attempted murder and robbery in Queens, the newspaper reported.
The two men pleaded not guilty in court during their arraignments. Both were held without bail.
Allah-Son-Allah’s lawyer told the Journal News his client was innocent while Smith’s attorney said he still had to receive evidence from the prosecutors.
