Feds seize record amount of meth-laced fake Adderall pills

Federal agents in Rhode Island have seized more than $4.6 million worth of fake Adderall pills containing methamphetamine — making it the largest known confiscation of its kind in the nation.

The raid, which took place in March but was only announced on Monday, led to charges against 27-year-old Dylan Rodas.

The suspected drug trafficker, who has been in federal custody from the time of his arrest, has agreed to plead guilty to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, US Attorney for Rhode Island Zachary Cunha said at a news conference.

The drug bust is believed to be among the largest seizures of methamphetamine in DEA New England Field Division history, he said.

“The quantity of methamphetamine represented by this seizure — methamphetamine that was packaged, prepped and ready to flow out onto the street to devastating effect on our communities — is staggering,” Cunha said.

He revealed that the pills weighed in at about 660 pounds, which he said is “roughly the weight of a V8 car engine or a baby grand piano.”

Adderall is a prescription medication most commonly used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

The drugs were carted away during two court-authorized searches at two locations in Cumberland, including the basement of Rodas’ home on Rhode Island Avenue, in March.

Rodas’ father and stepmother told the feds they did not know what he was doing in the basement behind a locked door, the Providence Journal reported.

Authorities also found a bucket containing 40 pounds of meth mixture prepped and ready to be pressed into pill form, two pill presses that can manufacture about 5,000 pills per hour each, $15,000 cash and multiple handguns, including two untraceable ghost guns and two that had the serial numbers defaced, he said.

Officials believe the methamphetamine came from Mexico and was possibly tied to local cartels, according to Brian Boyle, special agent in charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s New England office.

“With the potency of these fake pills, it only takes one pill to ruin your life,” he said.

Under a plea agreement, authorities are seeking a 10-year prison sentence for Rodas.

“The prosecution we announced today, which involves the seizure of what I can only term industrial-scale quantities of meth, is a stark reminder that we cannot be complacent, we cannot treat meth as a problem that happens elsewhere,” he said.
