Ferocious Tadej Pogacar wins Stage 17 as Jonas Vingegaard holds on, Geraint Thomas dropped at Tour de France

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) somehow managed to fend off a series of brutal attacks from Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) while Ineos’ Geraint Thomas was dropped on Stage 17 of the Tour de France. Pogacar eventually roared to victory in a thrilling finale, but without eating into Vingegaard’s overall lead too much.

It was another enthralling day of racing as Pogacar ramped up the intensity in a desperate attempt to reduce the deficit to Vingegaard in the general classification on a very demanding day in the Pyrenees.

All the pre-stage hype involved experts imploring Ineos to “have no regrets” and making it abundantly clear that “they have to go for it” to take the race to UAE Team Emirates and Jumbo-Visma.

He was not alone. Tom Pidcock could not live with the peloton, and Thomas himself faded badly towards the end as Pogacar stepped up the intensity in a big way to distance Thomas, but not the impressive Vingegaard in a thrilling finale.
