Filippo Ganna denies Dan Bigham individual pursuit gold at Cycling World Championships with stunning final lap

Filippo Ganna produced a stunning finish to snatch gold from Dan Bigham in the men’s individual pursuit at the UCI World Championships in Glasgow.

Great Britain’s Bigham made a strong start to the race as he steadily built a lead that went beyond two seconds at the 3km mark.

It looked like Bigham was far enough ahead to hold off an expected late attack from Italy’s Ganna.

But that wasn’t the case as Ganna put his foot down and cut the lead to one second ahead of the final lap.

Ganna then powered round the track and pipped Bigham to the line by 0.054 seconds.

Bigham banged his fist in frustration at the result but managed a smile a few minutes later as he shared a hug on the track with Ganna.

“I am really happy. We worked a lot for this result,” said Ganna, who is now a six-time world champion in the individual pursuit.

“I want to say thank you to Dan for an amazing battle.”

Lotte Kopecky followed up her fantastic Tour de France Femmes with victory in the women’s elimination race.

Just a week after finishing second at the Tour de France Femmes, Belgium’s Kopecky won gold in Glasgow.

Kopecky proved too strong for her rivals, beating France’s Valentine Fortin and USA’s Jennifer Valente to the line.

Great Britain’s Frances Brown won C1 individual pursuit gold with a new world record.

There was also gold for Great Britain duo Kadeena Cox in the women’s C4 500m time trial and Archie Atkinson in the men’s C4 scratch.

There were tears as Sophie Unwin and Jenny Holl won gold in the women’s B sprint.
