FIM Speedway adds UK and German events for expanded 2024 season as Bartosz Zmarzlik seeks three consecutive titles
The FIM Speedway Grand Prix World Championship series will increase to 11 rounds for the 2024 season..
The new calendar was announced on Friday for the forthcoming 101st season in the sport’s history. The Olympic Stadium in Wroclaw, Poland will return for an August 31 date.
For the first time since 1997, German club Landshut plays host for the FIM Speedway GP of Germany. That gives a home fixture for German setup Landshut Devils, who entered the Polish leagues back in 2021.
Additionally, Britain’s National Speedway Stadium in Manchester, United Kingdom will host the finals of the FIM Speedway of Nations from July 9-13.
Poland’s four-time champion Bartosz Zmarzlik will attempt to become the first competitor in SGP history to win three consecutive world titles as he gets ready for a Speedway GP season that takes place across eight different countries, with 15 riders from nine different nations – including Latvia’s Andzejs Lebedevs, Germany’s Kai Huckenbeck, Poland’s Dominik Kubera and Szymon Wozniak and Czech racer Jan Kvech.
The season will start at the FIM Speedway GP of Croatia at Donji Kraljevec’s Speedway Stadion Milenium on April 27, before ending at the FIM Speedway GP of Poland – Torun on September 28.
FIM Speedway championships director Laura Manciet discussed the additions of Manchester and Landshut, saying: “Expanding the calendar is a key goal for Warner Bros. Discovery Sports Europe and we are delighted to be bringing Speedway GP action to 11 fantastic venues in 2024, as well as the Speedway of Nations to the UK.
“It’s a real pleasure to bring the FIM SON to Manchester – which has a well-deserved reputation as one of the world’s top racetracks. I know British fans still have great memories of that night when Robert Lambert and Dan Bewley won gold in 2021. They will be hoping to do the same again, but there will be plenty of top countries determined to deny GB the trophy.
“It’s brilliant to see Wroclaw – another fantastic racetrack – hosting Speedway GP action again after a wonderful Monster Energy FIM SWC last summer.
“We are also excited to be heading to Landshut in 2024. The club has grown on and off the track in recent years and becoming a Speedway GP host is a natural step for them. We look forward to visiting Bavaria in May.
“I would like to thank all of our local organisers for their hard work and support, and we look forward to joining forces with them in 2024 to deliver an unforgettable FIM Speedway season.”
