Florence Pugh gets censored over ‘Oppenheimer’ nudity

“Oppenheimer” is director Christopher Nolan’s first R-rated film in over 20 years due to its sexual content, nudity and explicit language.

And one scene featuring a topless Florence Pugh has offended religious and government officials alike in India and the Middle East, who have taken action to censor the shot since the film’s global release.

Pugh, 27, plays Jean Tatlock, a brilliant psychiatrist and communist who falls for physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy).

A tweet by the so-called Disc Father, a self-proclaimed “physical media advocate” with tens of thousands of followers on social media, was one of the first moviegoers to spot the little black box … err, dress, that has been superimposed on Pugh’s nude body in the interest of modesty.

“Some countries are censoring #Oppeneheimer by putting a CGI [computer-generated imagery] black dress on Florence Pugh,” the media buff wrote alongside the edited shot from the film.

Sources close to the movie’s production have recently divulged to the Hollywood Reporter that rather than cut the NSFW scene, a “soft base” version showing the actress covered up was “used to secure a release” across the Middle East and India.

The insider added that the film cuts were created “per usual business practice” so they could debut in certain other countries.

Nudity isn’t the only aspect of “Oppenheimer” that’s got Indian viewers riled.

Elsewhere in the film, Pugh is depicted while engaged in intercourse with the main character, as she urges him to read aloud verses from a copy of “Bhagavad Gita” on Oppenheimer’s shelf.

The shot was previously condemned by Indian officials who claim it is inappropriate and offensive.

“It has come to our notice that the movie ‘Oppenheimer’ contains a scene which makes a scathing attack on Hinduism,” tweeted Uday Mahurkar, an information commissioner for the Indian Government, to Nolan, 52, on July 22.

“As per social media reports, a scene in the movie shows a woman [making] a man read ‘Bhagwad Geeta’ aloud while getting over him and doing sexual intercourse,” the memo said.

Mahurkar then noted that he does not comprehend the “motivation and logic behind this unnecessary scene on life of a scientist,” and regards it as “a direct assault on religious beliefs of a billion tolerant Hindus.” 

The scene also “amounts to waging a war on the Hindu community and almost appears to be part of a larger conspiracy by anti-Hindu forces.”

“Oppenheimer” has an ensemble cast, including Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Casey Affleck, Kenneth Branagh, Emily Blunt, Rami Malek and many more. 

It chronicles Oppenheimer growing into his moniker of the “Father of the Atomic Bomb” and his efforts with the Manhattan Project during World War II.

There was even a surprising secret cameo by “Batman Begins” star Gary Oldman. The Oscar winner, 65, portrays President Harry S. Truman in the flick, who served as the U.S. president from 1945 to 1953.
