Florida surfer attacked by shark off New Smyrna Beach

A 28-year-old surfer was bitten by a shark while catching waves off of New Smyrna Beach in Florida on Sunday.

The Volusia County Beach Safety reported that the victim, who has not been named, was surfing next to the New Smyrna Beach jetty when he fell off his board into the water and what is believed to be a shark chomped on his left foot, according to ClickOrlando.com.

Officials said the victim’s injuries were non-life-threatening and he was expected to recover.

It was not immediately known what type of shark was responsible for this latest attack — the third in Volusia County so far this year.

The two previous shark attacks took place just days apart in early March, reported The Daytona Beach News-Journal.

In the first reported incident of 2022, a 21-year-old visitor from New Jersey was bitten on his left knee and calf by a 5-to-6-foot black tip shark while fishing in New Smyrna Beach on March 9.

Four days later, a 20-year-old surfer was bitten on his right foot also in New Smyrna Beach. In both incidents, the injuries were minor and did not require hospitalization.

The latest shark attack in New Smyrna Beach comes just days after 15-year-old Addison Bethea was seriously injured after being bitten by a 9-foot-long shark while scalloping with her family 200 miles away in Keaton Beach, Florida.
