French Open: ‘He thought it was the end!’ – Baffling moment Nicolas Jarry walks off mid-game against Casper Ruud

There was a baffling moment during Nicolas Jarry’s fourth-round match against Casper Ruud at the French Open on Monday when he walked off mid-game, seemingly confused about the scoreline.

The Chilean was serving at 30-15 in the opening game of the third set, with Ruud having already established a commanding two-set lead, when he appeared to lose track of the score entirely in amusing fashion.

Jarry saw Ruud’s return go wide of the court and he immediately turned and walked over towards his chair as though he was expecting a changeover at the end of the game.

However, it was still only 40-15 in his favour with another point left for him to win.

Ruud, the fourth seed and a former finalist at Roland-Garros, looked perplexed as he stood at the back of the court waiting for his opponent to let rip with another serve, while the umpire seemed equally bewildered.

Eventually, he said something to Jarry to remind him of the scoreline and that he needed to turn and walk back to serve for at least another point. The 27-year-old threw his hand up by way of an apology and proceeded to trudge back to his mark.

Fortunately for Jarry, he was able to spare his blushes by winning the next point to complete the game properly at the second attempt with Ruud unable to take it to deuce and add to his frustrations.

“He thought it was the end of the game!” exclaimed Simon Reed, on commentary for Eurosport.

John McEnroe responded: “Not quite! He gets a round of applause for it. Who would figure that one out?”

It was a strange moment, but an entertaining one on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

The winner of the match faces Holger Rune or Francisco Cerundolo in the quarter-finals.
