‘Game of Thrones’ Jon Snow spinoff is still in limbo — here’s why
There isn’t a hint of Snow in the forecast.
Fans who are eagerly awaiting the rumored “Game of Thrones” spinoff featuring Jon Snow may just want to rewatch the original series at this point.
“We always have ‘Game of Thrones’ scripts in development. We greenlit ‘Dunk and Egg’ in the spring,” HBO CEO Casey Bloys recently told TV Line, referring to a series of novellas written by author George R.R. Martin.
According to Bloys, the ‘Dunk and Egg’ series is the only spinoff that has been given the go-ahead so far.
“I wouldn’t say there is anything else in that world that is close to a greenlight or anything,” the HBO exec added. “But we are always working on different scripts and ideas.”
The Post reached out to HBO for additional comment.
Martin, 75, initially posted on his blog the show’s working title of simply “Snow” in June 2022.
The spinoff would follow Jon Snow (played by Kit Harington) after the fan-favorite hero was exiled from Westeros following the murder of his aunt, Daenerys Targaryen.
At the time, it was reported that Harington, 36, was set to reprise his role as Snow.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the series was moving “boldly from a creative standpoint” as the series would totally “upend” the lackluster finale of the “Game of Thrones” series, which aired in 2019.
“I think if you asked him, he would’ve felt he got off lightly,” Harington told Entertainment Weekly shortly after news of the spinoff broke. “At the end of the show when we find him in that cell, he’s preparing to be beheaded and he wants to be. He’s done. The fact he goes to the Wall is the greatest gift and also the greatest curse.”
“He’s gotta go back up to the place with all this history and live out his life thinking about how he killed Dany, and live out his life thinking about Ygritte dying in his arms,” the actor continued. “And live out his life thinking about how he hung Olly, and live out his life thinking about all of this trauma, and that, that’s interesting.”
“So I think where we leave him at the end of the show, there’s always this feeling of like … I think we wanted some kind of little smile that things are OK. He’s not OK,” the Emmy winner commented on his character’s emotional state.
Currently, the only spinoff that has managed to take flight is Martin’s “House of the Dragon,” which premiered in August 2022.
The show’s second season is scheduled to return in 2024.
Jon Snow’s potential show — along with “House of the Dragon” — are only two of several proposed show’s from the “GOT” universe. Others include “Tales of Dunk and Egg,” “10,000 Ships,” “9 Voyages,” “Flea Bottom” and a rumored animated series.
