‘Game of Thrones’ star Hafthor Bjornsson tears pec muscle

Former Game of Thrones star and 2018 World’s Strongest Man Hafthor Bjornsson has suffered a horrific injury while going for his bench press personal record this week.

The 34-year-old, who was the World’s Strongest Man in 2018 as well as runner up three-times and third-place getter another four times, was on the return to powerlifting after a two-year hiatus to pursue boxing.

Bjornsson, who holds the world deadlift record of 1,104lbs, announced he was making a comeback to strongman competitions in order to break a number of records.

But he’ll have to wait after reportedly tearing his pectoral muscle off the bone while bench pressing 556lbs.

At his Thor Power Gym, the man known for portraying The Mountain in the hit HBO series had lifted some huge weights — starting 507lb, doing 529lb and an attempt at his all-time PB of 116lb.

However, it all went wrong as Bjornsson lowered the weight to his chest as he screamed out in pain after a noise viewers believe was the sound of the muscle tearing off the bone.

Bjornsson’s spotters quickly came to the strongman’s aid and it was clear something was very wrong.

One person said: “Saw this live, absolutely devastating. Wishing him a fast recovery.”

While another added: “Unfortunately this stuff can happen when you put on so much muscle and increase the weights so quickly.”

As a third commented: “Hoping for a speedy recovery for Thor. This was always a possibility from hopping back on cycle and growing muscle this quickly, he hasn’t had enough time for his tendons to match that growth.”

Bjornsson has taken to social media to reveal how he’s going after the injury.

“For those who don’t know what’s going on, I injured myself April 15th during my meet in the bench press,” he said on his YouTube Channel.

“I believe I completely tore my chest, upper chest off the bone. I will have to have a surgery if that’s the case. I have an MRI booked tomorrow so I’ll be able update you guys more on what’s happening.”

“I’m doing okay considering everything.”

“Things are tough, I have to be honest. Things like — hopefully I can make some of you guys laugh now — things like wiping my a– is difficult. I’m left-handed. Putting my underwear on is difficult.”

“It’s life, I have to take this now. I have to figure out how to recover as fast as possible so things aren’t easy but this is just a new journey. This is just a new chapter in my journey.”

“This is literally the biggest injury of my whole career so I got to tackle this.”

Bjornsson had tried for a boxing career and had four fights, including beating fellow Strongman rival Eddie Hall after a heated build up.

He was even linked to a fight with WBC world champion Tyson Fury but instead retired from the sport, claiming he never truly loved the sport.
