‘Gangsta’s Paradise’ rapper Coolio dead at 59
Rapper Coolio, known for his hit 90’s song ‘Gangsta’s Paradise,’ died Wednesday. He was 59.
The rap star was found dead on the bathroom floor of a friend’s home in Los Angeles, his longtime manager, Jarez Posey, told TMZ.
Coolio, whose legal name was Artis Leon Ivey Jr., was pronounced dead on scene by responding EMTs, TMZ reported. It’s suspected he died of cardiac arrest.
The rapper launched his career in the 1980s and he skyrocketed to national fame with his 1995 Grammy Award-winning hit “Gangsta’s Paradise,” which was featured on the soundtrack of Michelle Pfieffer’s 1995 crime drama “Dangerous Minds.”
The iconic song spent three weeks as a No. 1 on the billboard charts and was parodied by Weird Al Yankovic in his song “Amish Paradise.”
The California-based rapper’s other hits include 1994’s “Fantastic Voyage,” which peaked at #3 and “1,2,3,4 (Sumpin’ New)” and “It’s All the Way Live (Now).”
His death comes just four days after he took to Instagram to post his latest performance in Texas.
Members of the rap community and beyond took to social media to mourn the rapper and producer’s sudden death.
“This is sad news. I witness first hand this man’s grind to the top of the industry. Rest In Peace @Coolio,” Ice Cube tweeted.
“Peaceful Journey Brother,” Roots drummer Quest Love wrote.
MC Hammer remembered Coolio as “One of the nicest dudes I’ve known. Good people,” he said.
“My deepest condolences and prayers go out to the family of @Coolio,” actor and comedian Martin Lawrence said.
Coolio is survived by his six children and ex-wife, Josefa Salina, whom he married in 1996 before the couple split four years later.
