Georgia man burned 75 percent of body trying to open bag of chips with lighter

An elderly man in Georgia was burned over 75 percent of his body when he tried to open a bag of chips with a lighter, local officials said.

The 75-year-old victim – whose name has not been released – was seriously injured around 4:37 p.m. Wednesday in the City of Dalton, the town’s communications director, Bruce Frazier, told The Post in a statement.

“The victim…was using a lighter to open bags of chips which he was unable to do with his hands. While doing this, the man accidentally set himself on fire while sitting in a recliner,” the press release read.

Maintenance workers contained the blaze to the recliner using a water hose under firefighters arrived, it added.

The victim was taken to Erlanger Baroness Hospital in Chattanooga, Tenn. with third degree burns on about 75 percent of his body, Frazier explained.

The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon in an apartment complex in Dalton.

He was later moved to a burn center, and his current condition is unknown.

It is unclear if the chips themselves sparked the fire, or if the flames erupted from something else.

Chips can be very flammable because of their starchy, oily composition, according to VICE.
