Germany 3-3 Ukraine: Joshua Kimmich’s injury-time penalty earns hosts draw in 1000th international game

Germany drew 3-3 in an international friendly against Ukraine to mark their 1000th international match.

The home team were the favourites going into the match but in truth there was little at stake when it came to the result in Bremen.

Niclas Fullkrug put Germany ahead after just six minutes, but the next three goals came for Ukraine.

A brace for Viktor Tsygankov bookended an own goal by Real Madrid central defender Antonio Rudiger, and with the match approaching full-time, it seemed Ukraine would claim the win.

However, two late goals saved Germany from defeat, as Kai Havertz – linked with a move away from Chelsea to join Rudiger at Real – scored on 83 minutes, before Joshua Kimmich equalised from the spot a minute into injury time.

The visitors would have been unable to take part in a friendly in their home country due to the invasion by Russia, which has seen many players unable to play in Ukraine for extended periods of time.

The international team has been honouring its fixtures by playing in Poland, and both Ukrainian clubs and the national team have played other nations as a gesture of support.
