Gervonta Davis extends winning streak with seventh-round knockout win over Ryan Garcia – ‘I’m the face of boxing’

Gervonta Davis extended his record to 29-0, inflicting a first career defeat on Ryan Garcia with a seventh-round knockout in Las Vegas on Saturday.

Davis delivered a devastating body shot to stop Garcia – whose record now stands at 23-1 – in the non-title 136lb (9st 9lb) catchweight fight.

Garcia had also been sent to the mat with a roundhouse left in the second round, with Davis dominating the rest of the fight until the eventual stoppage.

“I am the face of boxing,” said Davis, who now has 27 knockouts in 29 unbeaten fights.

“I didn’t think that body shot would end it, but I saw his facial expression and that’s what made me take it to him.

“It was a good shot, for sure. I thought he was going to get up, but I like to play mind games, so when he was looking at me, I was looking at him trying to tell him, ‘Get up!’ He just shook his head, ‘no.’

“Everything about this was exciting. I was excited to be a part of this event.

“I remember coming up in the Golden Gloves and seeing Floyd (Mayweather Jr.) fight at the MGM. It was crazy.

“I actually just saw Rihanna perform at the Super Bowl, and I thought that’s going to be me one day, and we’re here.”

Garcia said it was “an honour” to be in the ring with Davis, who has won five world titles in three weight classes.

“I just couldn’t recover. Snuck under me and caught me good,” Garcia said.

“I was going to get back up, but I just couldn’t get up.”

Undefeated Devin Haney, who owns all four major championship belts in the division, could be next in line for Davis.
