Girl who died in Florida sand hole ided as Sloan Mattingly

The seven-year-old girl who became trapped in a sand hole with her brother while they were digging at a Florida beach Tuesday was visiting the state from Indiana with her family.

Despite frantic rescue efforts, Sloan Mattingly of Fort Wayne, died after being submerged in sand for roughly 20 minutes.

Her brother, 9-year-old Maddox, was pulled out by his father and survived.

The children and their mother and father were visiting Lauderdale-by-the-Sea on vacation, according to reports.

Sloan’s stricken father, Jason Mattingly, posted a brief note on his home improvement business’ Facebook referencing the tragedy.

“Please be patient as we are dealing with the loss of our daughter,” he said.

He told WANE 15 that Sloan — who became trapped underneath her brother in the roughly 5 foot deep hole — was “always smiling” and “full of love and life.”

The shattered principal at Sloan and Maddox’s elementary school issued a statement about the incident Wednesday.

“It is with a heavy heart that I write this letting you know we lost a precious member of the Lafayette Meadows school family,” wrote Jenny Fedele of Lafayette Meadows Elementary School. “Sloan Mattingly was a bright, sweet, loving 1st grade student in Ms. Vanbrocklin’s class. Sloan passed away on Tuesday.”

Responding emergency crew found Maddox buried in sand up to his chest, while Sloan was entrapped underneath him.

She was taken to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, where she was pronounced dead.

There were 52 instances in which people became buried in holes due to collapsed sand — with 31 of them dying from 1997 to 2007, according to a New England Journal of Medicine report.

The victims ranged in age from 3 to 21 years.
