Giro d’Italia 2023: ‘Nearly ended in tears!’ – Jay Vine almost crashes into own team car at start of Stage 4

There was a close scare for Jay Vine (UAE Team Emirates) right at the beginning of Tuesday’s Stage 4 of the Giro d’Italia as he almost crashed into his own team car.

Things did not improve for the Australian moments later as he almost took a nasty tumble while trying to communicate with his team car. Vine, who was clutching the side of the front window, swerved and almost fell off in the exchange.

After almost falling off the bike initially, he grabbed hold of the car window and proceeded to then lose his balance again.

He lurched into the car and just about managed to keep himself upright enough to remain on the bike in a precarious position as it wobbled beneath him.

“Here is Jay Vine – whoops!” exclaimed Rob Hatch, on commentary for Eurosport at the time.

“Well, that nearly ended in tears! That will have woken him up if nothing had before.”

Sean Kelly added: “Well, yes, that was a scare. I was concerned he was going to just go down!

“Jay Vine here, looking at yesterday’s stage, of course, we did see the team lose quite a bit of time. So the pressure is going to be on here for Vine to really stay in contention.”

Vine and UAE Team Emirates will have to hope that the day improves from what was a very inauspicious start as they seek to close the gap on Remco Evenepoel and Soudal-Quick Step.
