Giro d’Italia 2023 Stage 5: Preview, how to watch, TV and live stream details, route map and profile, when race starts

The fifth stage of the Giro d’Italia on Wednesday, May 10 will see the riders take the 171km route from Atripalda to Salerno with the focus again likely to be on Remco Evenepoel and if he can recover strongly from losing the maglia rosa.

Evenepoel, Primoz Roglic and Britain’s Geraint Thomas are among the big names that will be covering the stage, which will include two category-three climbs: Passo Serra and Oliveto Citra.

In Saturday’s opening stage, Evenepoel threw down a marker which earned him the first pink jersey as overall leader – his maiden maglia rosa.

Sunday’s second stage was one for the sprinters, albeit it was a finish reduced in numbers due to a crash with 4km remaining, while the third stage was won by Michael Matthews ahead of Mads Pedersen.
On Monday, Evenepoel came out on top in a “mental and physical” battle with Roglic towards the intermediate sprint in the third stage of the Grand Tour and extended his General Classification lead over the Slovenian by one second as Michael Matthews took the victory.
Tuesday’s eagerly-anticipated Stage 4 brought plenty of drama. Andreas Leknessund became the first Norwegian in 42 years to don the famous pink jersey after starring from the breakaway in a dramatic Stage 4 of the Giro d’Italia. Taking over Remco Evenepoel’s maglia rosa was a welcome consolation prize for Leknessund after he was denied the win by Frenchman Aurelien Paret-Peintre.
