‘Golden Bachelor’ Gerry dumped Matt James’ mom on night 1: reaction
Every rose has its thorn. Matt James’ mom, Patty James, was one of the first women to get the boot from Gerry Turner on night one of “The Golden Bachelor,” which premiered on Thursday.
Patty was joined by fellow contestants Anna, Maria, Pamela, Renee and Sylvia as they said their goodbyes.
Despite not getting too much screen time with the Indiana native, 71, Patty is staying positive. “It wasn’t meant to be,” she captioned an Instagram Story photo of herself on the ABC series. “God has a plan.”
Hours earlier, Patty shared a video of her son and his girlfriend, Rachael Kirkconnell, bringing a cake to her front door. “Such a sweet surprise,” she gushed.
Patty was one of the 22 women vying for the heart of the 72-year-old widow on the senior citizen “Bachelor spinoff. Her son Matt, 31, meanwhile, was the season 25 “Bachelor” lead.
The retired real estate professional from Durham, North Carolina, was married to Matt’s dad, Manny James. The pair split when Matt and his brother, John, were young and she raised them as a single mom.
In her “Golden Bachelor” bio, Patty said she was “looking for someone that cares about family like I do” and was “ready for her chance at an amazing love story.”
“Her heart is open, and she hopes to share positivity and zest for life with a partner,” the description continued. “Patty hopes Gerry is as excited about her as she is about him!”
Ahead of the show’s premiere, Turner also told the Post what he was looking for in a partner.
“I think the most important one was the ability to communicate well, both in listening skills and in being able to verbalize their feelings and their thoughts. Secondly, I wanted someone who had a really good sense of humor, someone who pretty much emoted kindness and thoughtfulness and a genuine feeling of wanting to be a partner,” he said.
“The most difficult part about that very first rose ceremony was trying to get enough information to make the first decisions. It was almost not a case of who’s right, but finding those who were definitely wrong for me,” he added. “Wonderful women, all poised, intelligent. I loved each one of them. But that first night, it was about finding the ones that I knew just would not be right for me.”
“The Golden Bachelor” premieres Thursday at 8 p.m. on ABC.
