Gov. Lori Lightfoot calls migrant buses from Texas ‘racist’

Chicago’s progressive mayor insists she welcomes being the latest Democratic destination for busloads of border crossers, as she accused Texas Gov. Greg Abbott of being “racist” and the Trump administration of “human cruelty.”

Mayor Lori Lightfoot made the heated remarks as the first 75 migrants arrived on two buses from the Lone Star State late Wednesday.

But the lefty lawmaker failed to mention President Biden’s immigration policies largely blamed for the surge at the southern border.

“Chicago is a welcoming city and as such has collaborated across various departments and agencies to ensure we greeted them with dignity and respect,” Mayor Lightfoot’s office said.

“As a city, we are doing everything we can to ensure these immigrants and their families can receive shelter, food, and most importantly protection,” she said, claiming that “many are fleeing violent, traumatic, or otherwise unstable environments.”

“This is not new,” Lightfoot’s office stressed. “Chicago welcomes hundreds of migrants every year to our city and provides much-needed assistance.”

Despite the welcoming message, Lightfoot’s office ripped Abbott, who has already been busing thousands of border crossers to Washington, DC, and the Big Apple in protest at the Lone Star State being overwhelmed under President Biden’s lax border policies.

“Unfortunately, Texas Governor Greg Abbott is without any shame or humanity,” the statement said.

“But ever since he put these racist practices of expulsion in place, we have been working with our community partners to ready the city to receive these individuals.

“We know that racism, discrimination, and human cruelty have played a pivotal role in how immigrants are received within our borders, and we are still working to recover from the previous presidential administration, which encouraged this behavior,” the mayor’s office said of former President Donald Trump.

“This is such an important moment for Chicago as a city has been a sanctuary for thousands of newcomers. We are welcoming them and we will not turn our backs on those who need our help the most.”

Lightfoot later also visited a shelter helping the first 75 immigrants who arrived on buses.

“Our city is prepared. We’re a welcoming city, and what we’ve seen is a tremendous outpouring, not only from city government but also a number of different not-for-profits that are part of our network of care,” she said, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker also insisted that “Illinois welcomes refugees, asylum seekers and immigrants.”

“My great grandfather came to this country as an immigrant fleeing Ukraine in 1881. Immigrants just like my family seeking freedom and opportunity built this country,” he tweeted Wednesday night.

“Illinois is and has always been a welcoming state.”

Abbott has already spent more than $12 million busing immigrants to the key Democratic cities in a protest largely aimed at trying to get them to force Biden to toughen up his border policies.

“President Biden’s inaction at our southern border continues putting the lives of Texans — and Americans — at risk and is overwhelming our communities,” Abbott said Wednesday as he confirmed Chicago was its latest sanctuary-city target.

“Mayor Lightfoot loves to tout the responsibility of her city to welcome all regardless of legal status, and I look forward to seeing this responsibility in action as these migrants receive resources from a sanctuary city with the capacity to serve them.”

In a July deposition obtained by Fox News this week, the chief of the US Border Patrol also blamed President Biden’s “no consequences” immigration policy for sparking the surge of illegal immigrants crossing into the US.

“In my experience, we have seen increases when there are no consequences,” Raul Ortiz said.
