Greta Thunberg smirks as she’s arrested in London at oil protest
Greta Thunberg was seen smirking as the climate activist was being detained by London police and hauled into a van after she was arrested at an oil protest.
The 20-year-old Swedish native was wearing a gray beanie and puffer coat as two officers ushered her into a police van with more than a dozen people who were arrested, according to The Guardian.
Six were busted for obstructing the highway, while 14 others were arrested for disrupting public order.
Thunberg had joined hundreds of other protesters for the Oily Money Out protest outside the five-star hotel, InterContinental. The protest was organized by Fossil Free London, a climate campaign group.
“Behind these closed doors at the oil and money conference, spineless politicians are making deals and compromises with lobbyists from destructive industries, the fossil fuel industry,” the activist told journalists.
“People all over the world are suffering and dying from the consequences of the climate crisis caused by these industries who we allow to meet with our politicians and have privileged access to.”
Delegates had to be escorted into the hotel by police officers as protesters held banners and yelled out “oily money out” and “cancel the conference,” while some lit yellow and pink smoke flares.
Delegates were told via text to not enter the hotel without a police escort. “For your own safety, do not attempt to cross the protest line,” the text read, according to The Guardian, who obtained it.
Protesters are expected to stay outside the hotel for the entire conference, which lasted three days.
This isn’t Thunberg’s first time being busted. She was also arrested in July at a Swedish protest. Earlier this year, she was also charged with disobedience for blocking oil tankers for six days.
She was also detained in Norway during a police demonstration in March.
Thunberg inspired the world in 2018 when she continuously protested outside of the Swedish Parliament.
She has since inspired several other global youth movements that are fighting for climate change.
