Gymgoers detain hatchet-wielding madman inside California Planet Fitness
Four California gymgoers jumped into action Tuesday when they noticed a hatchet-wielding madman holding another man hostage inside their Planet Fitness.
John Keene told Fox News he jumped off his stair machine as soon as he and three other good Samaritans noticed the screaming assailant holding a victim at knifepoint in the Corona gym, located roughly 50 miles east of Los Angeles.
The bloodied victim, 41, came sprinting into the gym around 9:30 a.m., police said.
Ronald Chand, 30, allegedly stabbed him multiple times with a knife and hatchet in the parking lot before the victim ran into Planet Fitness seeking refuge.
Chand quickly caught up to his bleeding victim inside and held him at knifepoint again, until the foursome pounced on him without any consideration for their own safety.
“I kind of didn’t really hesitate,” Keene recounted. “None of us even talked as we walked over there, we all did the exact same thing.”
“I didn’t really decide to do anything we just did.”
The group startled Chand enough that his unidentified victim was able to escape his grasp, video shows.
They then jumped onto Chand, taking him to the ground. The foursome ripped his knife and hatchet away and kept the madman pinned to the floor until police arrived.
“He yelled, ‘Respect us’ and then mostly ‘Give me water,’” Keene said of Chand.
One of the good Samaritans, who Keene said works as a nurse, believes he smelled methamphetamine on Chand as they held him down.
The victim has since been released from an area hospital, where he was treated for multiple, but non-life-threatening stab wounds.
Chand was also taken to an area hospital after sustaining minor injuries.
He has been booked on an attempted murder charge with a bail of $1,000,000.
