Harriet Dart, Jodie Burrage beaten after coming through qualifying at Pan Pacific Open and Ningbo Open
Jodie Burrage and Harriet Dart were beaten in their first-round matches in Tokyo and Ningbo respectively.
British No. 2 Burrage came through qualifying at the Ningbo Open but could not progress further as she was beaten 6-2 7-6(1) by Tamara Korpatsch.
Dart was also a qualifier at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.
She lost 6-3 7-6(4) to eighth seed Veronika Kudermetova.
Dart quickly recovered from an early break against the world No. 19 and missed two chances to break at 2-2.
The British No. 3 lost serve to fall 5-3 behind and Kudermetova closed out the set in the next game.
Dart started the second set well, winning the first 10 points to move 3-0 ahead.
However, Kudermetova responded by reeling off four games in a row.
Dart managed to force a tie-break but it was Kudermetova who managed to come out on top and advance into the next round.
Burrage also had chances against Korpatsch.
She started positively with a break of serve in the first game, but was then broken back immediately.
Burrage passed up two chances to break in the fourth game and that proved crucial as Korpatsch ran away with the set.
Burrage had two opportunities to serve out the second set but couldn’t take either, and Korpatsch won it in a one-sided tie-break.
Top seed Ons Jabeur plays later in the day.
In Tokyo, sixth seed Daria Kasatkina came from a set down to beat Marta Kostyuk 3-6 6-4 6-3.
World No. 2 Iga Swiatek is set to play her first match since the US Open against Mai Hontama on Wednesday.
