Scholes defends Maguire England call-up despite lack of Man Utd minutes

“The England defender wants to stay and fight for his place despite falling down the pecking order at Old Trafford this season.
“But Maguire is concerned that a lack of game-time next year could hinder his chances of starting for Gareth Southgate’s side at the European Championship.
“Maguire attracted interest from West Ham, Inter Milan and Roma during the January transfer window and will have offers during the close-season, although may have to accept a cut in his £190,000-a-week wages.
“United are not desperate to sell Maguire, but are close to the Premier League’s spending limits and with two years left on his contract it would suit the club to cash in this summer.”
Arsenal consider Kante swoop
Arsenal have signed Willian, David Luiz and Jorginho in recent years from Chelsea, and The Mirror suggests there could be another player in line for a move.
“The Blues have seen a host of new faces arrive through the door since Todd Boehly took control of the club, spending huge sums on players. Enzo Fernandes became the British record signing when he joined in January, adding to an already stacked midfield.
“That has other clubs on red alert and, according to reports, the north Londoners are looking to pounce on the uncertainty surrounding Kante’s future by signing the Frenchman. His contract expires in 2023 and, despite reports of talks between the player and the club, nothing is yet signed.”
Milner set for Brighton move
James Milner could join Adam Lallana on a free transfer at Brighton after he leaves Liverpool this summer.
The Sun suggests the 37-year-old utility player could be a target for the south coast club.
“Now it’s thought likely he’ll join fellow ex-Liverpool star Adam Lallana, 34, at the Amex Stadium.
“Brighton must wait until his current deal expires before making any approach.
“But the Seagulls are said to have discussed the signing “internally” and regard him as an ideal recruit for manager Roberto De Zerbi’s passing style.”
Everton panic over relegation costs
Everton are growing concerned that many of their first-team players do not have contracts that automatically cut the wages should they be relegated.
While some of the newer signings have the protection built in, less recent additions will be unaffected.
“But many of the players who were already at the club did not have significant relegation reductions written into their lucrative contracts, while goalkeeper Jordan Pickford signed a new contract, worth over £150,000-a-week, in February.
“Everton sold Richarlison, one of the big earners, to Tottenham Hotspur in the summer, but other highly paid players such as Yerry Mina and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are still at the club, while Andre Gomes, who is on loan at Lille, has a contract that runs to next summer.
“The club did not sign a single new player in January to boost their battle against relegation and in March announced financial losses for the fifth successive year, which have totalled more than £430 million.”
