House Republicans discreetly subpoena Devon Archer
House Republicans discreetly took aim at Hunter Biden’s longtime former business partner Devon Archer, demanding he fork over a trove of documents.
Republicans had demanded a lengthy batch of documents from Archer last August pertaining to interactions with key companies and people in the investigation into the Biden family.
“To date, neither Mr. Archer nor [law firm] Boies Schiller has produced any documents in response to the Oversight Committee’s August 25, 2023 request,” Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) and Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), wrote in a letter accompanying a subpoena.
They had expected Archer to cough up the documents by Sept. 6, 2023. His team informed House Republicans last October that it was working with a vendor to produce the material.
Now Comer and Jordan are resorting to a subpoena.
Archer’s lawyer, Matthew Schwartz, chairman-elect & managing partner of Boies Schiller Flexner LLP, insists his client has been cooperative.
“Devon Archer continues to cooperate in all legitimate investigations,” Schwartz said in a statement to The Post.
“He is happy to provide documents to Congressional investigators and to testify publicly under oath, and is working with House staff to make that happen.”
Comer and Jordan are subpoenaing Archer for “all records and documents” he possesses related to over two dozen entities such as Rosemont Capital and Seneca Global Advisors, as well as roughly two dozen key figures in the probe like Joe Biden and Hunter Biden.
Typically, Comer and Jordan publicly announce high-profile subpoena actions their investigation takes. This time, however, it was done somewhat quietly.
Archer has been a key witness for the House GOP impeachment inquiry, a three-panel endeavor led by Comer.
Notably, Archer did not appear at the second impeachment inquiry hearing last month due to a scheduling issue, according to Schwartz.
Still, Comer has cited Archer as one of three key witnesses in his probe, given his previously close ties to the first son.
Archer spoke with investigators last summer and recounted how Hunter Biden put his father on the phone during multiple meetings with business partners.
He also stressed that he was not aware of President Biden using his political role to distribute favors for Hunter’s associates. Republicans have still hammered the Bidens for cashing in on the family name.
Archer had partnered with Hunter Biden on multiple overseas business ventures. He has since been sentenced to a year and a day in prison for an unrelated $60 million scheme to sell bonds to the Oglala Sioux tribal entity in South Dakota.
He requested a shortened sentence in February due to his cooperation with the House impeachment investigation and claimed he played a “minor role” in the fraud.
In their subpoena letter, both Comer and Jordan noted how fellow former Hunter Biden business associate Jason Galanis produced material “confirming that your client received relevant email communications related to our investigation of Joe Biden.”
They also stressed the importance of Archer turning over those documents.
“The Committees are also concerned about the national security implications of a President’s or Vice President’s immediate family members receiving millions of dollars from foreign nationals or companies without any oversight,” Comer and Jordan wrote.
Comer has called on President Biden to testify and suggested that criminal referrals may be forthcoming, even as Republicans appear to lack the votes needed for impeachment.
