Ten Hag backs Martial to step up in Rashford’s absence
United manager Erik ten Hag believes Anthony Martial, who has scored seven goals in 17 appearances this season, can fill the goalscoring void left by Rashford.
“He is ready to start a game – against Everton [on Saturday] he was ready to start,” said the Dutchman.
“The stats are telling you that the moment he is on the pitch the time he needs for a goal is really less [not much].
“I refer to the [home] games against Man City, against Liverpool: when he’s in the team, we play our best football and have our best results. I see how he contributes.”
Luke Shaw will also miss the Sevilla game due to a hamstring injury picked up against Brentford last week.
However, Christian Eriksen is back after almost three months out with an ankle injury picked up during an FA Cup tie with Reading three months ago. Aaron Wan-Bissaka also is back to match fitness.
Rakitic: We will have Man Utd’s respect
Sevilla have won just one of their last four games and are onto their third manager this season with Jose Luis Mendilibar taking over from Jorge Sampaoli earlier this month.
Midfielder Ivan Rakitic says United will still respect Sevilla because of their history in the competition.
“But I know that we are going to have the respect of United, because of the great history that Sevilla has in this competition.”
The former Barcelona midfielder says he and his team-mates will have to play their best if they are to secure a spot in the semi-finals.
He added: “Do not make mistakes, the most important thing. Every mistake in this type of encounter is punished, you cannot afford to be foolish.
“We are already in the quarter-finals and the best of the best are there. There is very little to go until the end. We have to play the best game possible and trust ourselves as much as possible.”
