Hugh Grant reveals truth about Andie MacDowell Oscars joke
Hugh Grant made headlines following his appearance at the 2023 Oscars on Sunday — and he now says he was worried that might happen.
Grant, 62, presented at the 95th Academy Awards alongside his “Four Weddings and a Funeral” co-star Andie MacDowell, 64, and made a crude joke while onstage.
“We’re actually here to do two things: The first is raising awareness about the vital importance of using a good moisturizer,” Grant said at the Oscars. “Andie’s been using one every day for the last 29 years, I’ve never used one in my life.”
He described MacDowell as “still stunning” — and himself as “basically a scrotum.”
On “The View” Thursday morning, Grant told co-host Whoopi Goldberg, 67, that he wrote the joke and was “extremely nervous” about it.
“I think I got away with it,” he said of the self-deprecating line.
The British actor shared that Sigourney Weaver, 73, told him that he doesn’t “look like a scrotum,” and her approval of the joke “relaxed” him.
Goldberg then gifted Grant moisturizer “just in case.”
“Would you mind if I moisturized during our interview?” Grant quipped.
Notably missing from the Oscars conversation on “The View,” however, was any mention of Grant’s “rude” encounter with ABC Oscars red-carpet host Ashley Graham, 35.
Grant was seen rolling his eyes at the end of the awkward interview, prompting one viewer to describe the star as “a total a–hole.”
Graham asked Grant what his favorite thing about the Academy Awards was, and he paused before responding.
“It’s fascinating. The whole of humanity is here. It’s a vanity fair,” he said, to which Graham interpreted as meaning Vanity Fair’s famous post-Oscars party.
Graham, seemingly uncomfortable at that point, asked the “Notting Hill” actor how it felt to star in “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.”
“I’m barely in it; I’m in it for, like, three seconds,” Grant clapped back.
“But still, you showed up and had fun, right?” Graham replied.
“Almost,” he replied in a snarky manner.
The model later reacted to the viral interview.
“You know what? My mama told me to kill people with kindness, so there you go,” she told TMZ.
“You always want the engagement, but it’s really not up to you,” the site’s videographer then remarked to the model, to which she replied: “Right — that’s right.”
